fixing a Shure 55SW

A friend of mine gave me what I think is a shure 55SW (i'm pretty sure its the old version)about two years ago, said it didn't work and that I could have it if I wanted it. I know a little bit about electronics, so I figured what the heck, I'll take a look at it. When I looked at this thing it had a different connector other than the usual XLR jack on it, so I've never actually tested the thing to see if it works. I looked at shures 2 page manual on the thing and it says something about it having a connector that works with cannon xl series, or switchcraft A3 connectors. I've never seen these kind of connectors before, and was just wondering if they are still in use.

Edit: I've found out that I need a MC3M connector that I will probably have to find an adapter for in order to plug this microphone into an xlr input. With that said, apparently this mike is broken according to my friend who gave it to me, so i'm wondering if it's worth fixing. . .

Is it broken, or did he just not have a way to plug it in?

I own 2 of these with the old Amphenol connectors like you said. I made my own cable. I picked up a new connector that matches the mic at my local electronics store, and hand wired it into a new mic cable.

The mic has a "vintage" sound, probably best suited for something, I haven't found what yet.

I just like to mount one on an extra stand just to have it around for looks.

I have several older mics that take turns on the stand.

broken?

You know, it may be quite possible that my friend just didn't have the correct connector, and the mic may not be broken at all. I took it apart last night and all the wires are connected, albeit there is some corrosion on the contact points and the foam that they used as shockmounts has also degraded due to corrsion. I'm wondering if a local place will have the connector, or if I'll have to order one online. Did you hand wire it from the MC3M connector to an XLR connector?

I think what he's suggesting is to take a standard XLR cable and chop the one end off. The splice the old(new) connector in its place. The cable has different connectors on each end so you can use it with the mic.

gotcha

yeah, after rereading his post thats what I gathered, looks like I've got some work to do this weekend!
