Hi folks,

I've been playing guitar off and on for about 20 years or so - now want to get into home recording - I'm a complete n00b though, and am not to sure where to start.

I have an Audiophile card, Cakewalk Sonar Home Studio XL, ropey PC, Pod XT Live, Zoom drum machine and an assortment of guitars but no mics. Also have a Marshall stack, Line 6 Spider amp, and Roland Bass Cube amp. I'm monitoring my sound through my hi-fi.

The music I wish to record is rock-style guitar/bass/drums - with the odd vox here and there. Direct recording will probably be the way to go as I've got 2 young kids running around the house.
Any advice/obvious equipment I'm missing? Can anyone please suggest any good reading material so I can catch up on all the technology? I look forward to working with you all!

Welcome to the forum. Yep, read the tweakheadz stuff, lots of good basic info there. The best advice I can give you at this point is try recording something, if it dosen't sound the way you want it to come back and ask questions. The more specific your questions, the better answers you will get. Have fun but don't expect to get rich, and don't be afraid to experiment. Once again, welcome aboard.

Not too bad for a first attempt. Just my opinion but the drum track seems a little too dominant, you might either back off the drums or bring up the guitars. Also the bass lacks definition, maybe a slight cut in the lower frequency (250-500 EQ cut on bass track) would define the bass a little. All in all though it's not a bad mix. Remember that when making adjustments, do so in small increments, slight changes can make a big difference in the outcome.
