First mix on this forum

Ok, after overcoming the 'no url's until you've done 5 posts' rule, his is my first submission onto this forum for crits and feedback.

These guys are a local band, they've recorded 4 tracks over this last weekend and this is the first mix I've done. Alas, my ears were pretty shot away after the actual recording, so I might go back into the studio to finish their mixing and find that I need to change most of it, but let me know what your initial impressions are.

I liked it, I am pretty new to the recording thing, but the only thing that stuck out at me was that the snare sounded really roomy if that makes sense. But I thinks it worked for the style of music this band does.

Thanks Zabadabado, and what a fantastic name you you have! :D

The drummers kit ranged from just about about playable to falling to bits. I mic'd his snare top and bottom, but the the top side recording revealed that his snare was making all kinds of additional noises and no amount of fiddling with it could eliminate prior to the recording. I had to make do with a mix of the two mic, with the bottom snare making up the majority. The bizzare noises from the top snare were softened out with a bit more reverb than I would normally use, hence, fairly roomey sounding snare overall.

Hey Mystic......I don't how I missed this. It says you posted it 2 days ago. Weird, never saw it.

This is a wild tune. I love the vocals and the whole...I can't find the word...almost "theatrical" feel to it. I like the raw sound of the drums, but I can't hear the kik. And the ride might be a little loud.

Very original writing. I dig it. :cool:

cheers for your comments, glad you liked the song too. The band are quite eccentric, and although there are some obvious influences in their sound, mostly Radiohead and the Mars Volta, that singer has a really quirky style that I think sets him apart a bit.

With regards to the kick drum, its there, its pops up to the fore when the bass guitar and the synths are pulled back in the mix, but it seems to be fighting a losing battle for space when everything is in.

Unfortunately, as the drummers kit was shot to pieces, I've had to rely on the ambient mic and overheads for a lot of the drum tone, and they contained rather more ride cymbal than I'd have liked. Ah well.

Anyway, thanks again, I may be posting a few more of their songs soon, so stay tuned.
