I'm just starting to put together my home studio, and its come time to purchase a mic. I want to get something that will retain its usefulness as I progress. At first, I was set on buying a condenser in the $200-$300 range, but now it seems that, as the rooms I'll be using for my recordings are fairly weak acoustically, I should invest in a good dynamic mic for starters. Oh, I'll be using it for lots of rock vocals, and I'd like to get a good acoustic sound... (I'll most likely be using a PreSonus FirePod as my PreAmp if anyone wants to take that into account.

With a $200 - $300 budget, get a Shure SM57, for the rock vocals a pair of MSH-1O's for the acoustic. You'll have $$ left over too :)

I can't find MSH-10's anywhere on the internet...

That's an "o"... but they're still very hard to find. I've submitted the page for Google to crawl. Hopefully, that will help.

oh great! thank you. How does that sm-58 do with the vocals, being as its not a condenser mic... I keep hearing mixed feedback on it as a recording mic.

Whoa! Those condensors are really cheap! (MSH-1O)

Would those work for using as overheads on a drum kit?

I like the suggestion of the SM-57 for vocals, but I also hear good things about the MXL small diaphragm mikes (for the money). The MXL 603 is said to be a good small capsule condenser for the money ($99), and I'm almost afraid to hear how good the MXL 604 will be. I think Alex Gerst just some some, so I'll be interested to hear his and Harvey's comments. Those should be good for miking acoustic instruments in stereo, since you get both cardioid and true omni capsules.

That's my two cents worth.

I'm getting a set to use for that exact reason, apparently they are pretty damn good.

i have a pair i use as overheads...i like them better than the akg c1000's and the matched oktava mc012's i used to have

If your room sound isn't all that good I would suggest the C rather than the O.
