I ordered an AEA R84 last weekend and it arrived today.

First impressions are very good. The build quality is top-notch and for what it does, which is fairly unique, it seems to excel.

So far, I've tried it on vocals and acoustic guitars (an old Gibson, an old Martin, and a baritone Taylor). All in all it seems like a solid investment and a great mellow sounding mic. Very different from what I usually use.

I bought one of these almost 20 years ago, for a folk artist project I was recording at the time. I didn't really give it a fair chance on that project, and it stayed boxed up until I started using it on my own music stuff a few years ago.

It's a great mic, very mellow as you say, and good at taming overly bright or edgy sound sources - vocals in particular for my case.

I'd say it's definitely a great investment. There is very little gear I've bought over the years that actually went up in price. Most of it went to electronic recycle or is boxed up in the basement for eternity.

My only complaints with the mic is the non-detachable cable, and not really a fan of the 'case' provided. Aside from that, it's been a great purchase and I'm sure you'll get a lot of use out of it.

Thanks for the reply. I agree with you about the cable. I think it's an aesthetic thing, but who knows? I plugged this one into a Canare to get a little more length. It's fine, but just having an XLR jack would make more sense to me.

The 'case' is interesting. I have all my mics in those fake Pelican cases Harbor Freight sells, which is nice because they stack. I'll probably try to get one for this.

The sound is nice, especially for the money.
