First Look - MXL Genesis vs MXL 960

And here I've spend months upon months trying to duplicate old vintage Neumann sounding mics.:(

I'm betting that something is different with the capsule. This doesn't sound like a typical MXL capsule...the Genesis sounds expensive. Not only is the bottom bigger, but tighter as well...the Genesis definitely sounds more like a high end mic...

...The capsule is 32mm and is shared with a couple other mics in the MXL lineup, e.g. the V89, and I'll find out which others.

This capsule question is interesting. MXL is using a 12 micron diaphragm / 32mm capsule in the V900. This mic's frequency response is quite flat with only a very broad 2dB rise at the top end. And now I've learned the MXL 2003 has been "re-issued" as the 2003a (shown on the MXL site, have not seen it for sale anywhere) - also with a much flatter response top end. So it appears there's some ongoing experimentation with capsule implementation.

Harvey recorded The Feds and their recordings sound great. So Harvey's alright by me. :D I think it's more about the person doing the engineering, the person doing the mixing, etc than it is about gear.

Thanks for stopping by Captain Obvious!;)

Because gear is a critical factor! You can't get a good sound without nice gear. However, there is no substitute for experience. A good engineer can get a good sound using almost anything if he knows what to do. So, you were stating the obvious.

However, your post had very little to do with the source and subject of this thread. The thread is very specific about a very specific mic and discussion revolving around interest in it. So, even though your point was a fairly good one, it was completely non-sequiter on the subject of the thread. We are discussing the good and bad points of this mic and the manufacturer's line. Not Harvey. Although we love Harvey, so again, your point was moot.

BTW, lighten up and try and have a sense of humor. K?:)

My reply was tongue in cheek so I could say the same about you. My post was valid in the context of everything else and where the thread had veered toward. I was simply stating that he recorded The Feds and I like them. I added on, for those complaining about Harvey choosing good cheap gear, that it's not always about the gear. That was to further prove his point and also to steer us back to the original intent of the thread. But since you were so gracious as to call me Captain Obvious, I could say the same for your post.

Sorry to hijack a little here, but what about the MXL V76T? Is it good? How does it compares? Which one is a better deal?

I know Harvey's history. Who are the Feds?
A rock band out of Denton, TX. Used to be signed on a large label and then got dropped. Moved on to another smaller label and now have recently broke up. Sadly, they played their last show a few weeks ago or so. I think they still have a myspace and I think their website is www.thefedsrock.com.

Yes, sadly, "The Feds" broke up after many years of success. Hopefully, some of the members will start new groups. For the record, my son Alex produced and engineered most of their albums, not me. They're a great group. All of Matt Slider's vocals were done with MXL mics.

A Gerst is a Gerst. :D

That's a sad story. Unfortunately, one I've lived through myself.:(
