No you don't need USB to install the upgrade. Once it's on the card, there's some special way you hold a couple of buttons as you boot the MR8 that does it..........I still haven't located the procedure yet, I know I have it somewhere.

If I'm not mistaken (and I very well could be) isn't there a file that comes with the update that tells how to update?

i suppose that will mean that i DO have to use a USB cable mate?
i just dont want to spend any money ona cable im only gonna use once,or not at all cos quite frankly i can afford it.
or maybe there is a away of installing it onto the card via the card reader,,THEN geting the card into the mr8?
thats what i thought i was doing, but nuthin seemed to happen

Fostex shows how to update your software version in the mr8 "support" file located on the "Product Manuals and Documents" page.

Here's a direct link to the zip file containing the support file.

http://www.fostex.com/support/pdf/fostex/mr8/mr8support.zip

Also contained in that zip file is a pdf file called "MR8_Software_update_USB.pdf" that will walk you through the upgrade step-by-step.

You can do it!;)

p.s. it says in the walkthrough guide that you WILL need a USB cable to perform the upgrade.Thats what Fostex says...

N TRACKS etc

oh,,thanks a lot fellas!
i was actually ON the Fostex site about to do that when i got this message.
i shall report back on wether i can get ot together or not!

N TRACKS etc

So it seems i CAN update is usuingthe card reader,,,but the quistion NOW is how do i ,
"Simply copy the update file to the CF card root directory."
DOH! Its never ending!

"
If you have CF card reader connected to your computer, please download V1.03 zipped file and extract it onto your desktop. Load the CF card into the card reader and copy the extracted update file to the root directory of the CF card. Remove the CF card from the reader and insert it into the MR8 card slot. Follow instructions from section 3-9) through 3-12) in the “MR8_Software_Update_USB.pdf” document.

Note 1: Macintosh computers with a CF card reader can also be used for the update process. Fostex has confirmed the correct operation with OS 9 and OS X.
Note 2: When copying the update file from PC to MR-8 CF card, reformatting the CF card or backing up the song data is not required. Simply copy the update file to the CF card root directory. All you need is about 1.6MB of free memory space on the CF card to copy the file. This is applicable on either situation that you directly connect the MR8 to the PC via USB cable or loading the MR8 CF card only to the PC via CF card reader.

When you copy the update file to the root directory, the PC screen will look like below.
In this example, MR8 is recognized as F drive in the PC system."

Thats the easy part.LOL.When you hook your card reader up just go to "My Computer" and open the cardreader drive..It should be listed with the rest of your computers drives.Double click it to open it,copy(or cut) and paste the file "mr08_mv1.03" into the cardreaders drive.

To further simplify this:D Download(or place it if you already have it)the "mr08_mv1.03" update file to your DESKTOP.

Right click the "mr08_mv1.03" file and choose "copy".

Double click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.

Inside of "My Computer" you should see the Card Reader Drive.

Double Click the Card Reader Drive.(Make sure your card reader is hooked up to the computer and that the computer is recognizing it as a Drive)

Right Click in ANY of the open space in that drive and choose "PASTE".

That will copy/paste the file into the card readers root directory.

The rest of the procedure is explained in the MR8_Software_update_USB.pdf file.

OK man.LOL.Give it a shot....it should work.Just follow the instructions in the support .doc and the step by step guide in the "MR8_Software_update_USB.pdf" file and you'll have it whipped in no time.

Take it easy!;)

Just scroll down to Step 3 in the PDF.From that point on it explains how to proceed the update with the Card Reader.

You got the file in the root directory! It wont be long now!:D

Correction:

Start HERE:
Section 3. of the PDF file- Software Updating Procedures

In section 3 just skip down to Step 9.

Follow Step 9 through 12 and you have got it!

Once you have the update file file copied onto the root directory of the CF Card.......

Turn the MR 8 off.

Remove the CF card from the reader and insert it into the MR8 card slot.

Follow instructions from section 3-9) through 3-12) in the “MR8_Software_Update_USB.pdf” document.

If you want me to I can post the next steps here....they are laid our pretty good in the pdf file.

Reboot your computer and MR8 and see if that makes any difference.
