OK, here's the 3rd and last update, I think I brought out the bass and drums a bit better. It's getting hard to tell if I'm making any difference. Time to put these away for a while.
There are also a few more songs on my band website (hit my www button and go to 'grab') if you're interested. They're not as good as these IMO, but I could be wrong (I know the playing is sloppier ). Thanks again to everyone who listened and commented, it's been a great help!

I listened to "FKAWBT (fe-KAW-bit) 3rd post".

The intro sounded old-Genesis-like, but afterwards it went in a bit different direction. The mix sounds a bit old, but good for live, and if there were any flaws in the mix, the music makes up for it. This song could benefit from vocals, but I'm not sure, since this works very well like this too. Some good tight playing and messing around. Sounds like a good jam session.

The first tune was right up my alley. I love the theme and the punch on it. I like to hear bands that pay attention to each other sonically. I would have loved picking bass on that tune myself. The second tune is very good and more involved in the variation on the theme. Although, I think it would demand a bit more in multitracking control to develop each voice independantly. I agree it does sound as if you had a shortage of mics. there is a substantial amount of bleed over in the mics and some of your snare attacks are smothered a bit by ambience. Your tight man, and tasteful. Piano is cool, just not big enough, sounds like volume is used to overcome being thin. A little busy, a rhodes is meant to resonate, if its too busy it never gets to finish the envelope. Damned good player though, reminds me of Max Middleton playing with Jeff Beck sorta. Bass player is right on in his pickin. Bass splats a little which a lil eq and compression to keep it constant would smooth out, good picker. Guitar player is real good, just needs to relax a little, there`s plenty of time to sing, use the holes and phrase a bit more. Overall, in my humble opinion, I think more isolation of instruments in the mics would allow you more control and make it enormously easier to mix and you would have a great live recording sound. For a first take its a hit in my book.

Toki, you hit right on it, we really need to get our instruments separated better. Working on that now, these are just the tracks I picked to start my "tutoring" in mixing. I'm setting up my drums today for our first studio takes, WOOHOO. So in a while I'll have some fresh clean music to post, then let the real learning begin

Well, since you recommended listening and responding to other peoples music... I guess I'll start with you hehe.

First off, I really don't feel qualified to say anything, but since this is just opinion...

Damn good recording for doin it live... I can never get a good drum sound off real drums, but then we do have a piss poor drumset, and the mics ain't much to speak of either.

As far as the mixing goes, I liked it except for whats already been said... definately bring up the lead guitar, and get the kick and snare to have more bite (or it could have just been the conversion to mp3?). Just seems to me the drums could have a bit more low end to em? really good playin though.

Musics not really my style, but very well played though. Also, I think its already been mentioned, the keys sound is kinda weak, not the playing, just the sound of it.

yeah, its them keys that bring the whole sound down... just need a different sound for em.

oh, and I listened to both songs, and both seem too have the same faults... and strengths too

You seemed to have forgotten me in your reply post , hope I didn't piss you off, I really liked your stuff.
Definitely agree with the comments. I wish I knew more about mixing, the learning curve seems to be steep. I'm sure a real sound engineer could pull out the stuff that's stumping me, but I'm gonna let these sit and move onto other things for a while. They are pretty crappy tracks to begin with

Looks like you already have a ton of advice on the mix for these tunes.

I just listened to "FKAWBT" -- I like how this tune goes through several different sections. It is a cool jam! Probably pretty exciting to see live.

Then listened to Spice Clock -- Now this I like! The groove is so good. You can really get into it. I think I like this one better just because of that funky bass line ... Very nice!

FKAWBT is an acronym for a name that's too long and that I can't reveal here.

We figure that's what people are going to do with an acronym like FKAWBT. It can mean so much and we want to keep it a little mystery.

What...? you mean I'm not the only one who does that...??

Well,.. the reason I haven't posted on this one is mainly because it's a live jam.

First off,.. I'm not a big "live" fan. They always tend to have that... uh... "live" sound. This is obviously nothing against you... I don't like live versions of pretty much any of my favorite songs. I'm a "studio" type of guy. I like nice, even mixes, perfect levels, proper compression (not overcompression.. ), tightly executed parts,.. etc. etc.

Secondly,.. I'm not a big "jam" fan. I'm not too hip on listening to extended five minute jams. Jams usually lend themselves to sloppy(er) playing and less cohesiveness. (well duh.. ) which translates to more for me to have to nit-pick at. (contrary to popular belief, I don't take pleasure in finding as many "mistakes" as possible in people's mp3 submissions. ) Now,.. don't get me wrong. I love to play five (or ten or thirty or whatever) minute jams.. but I wasn't really "coherent" in the 70's so I never got into that whole "never-ending jam" thing. (P.S. "coherent" does not mean that I was stoned.. It means I was too young.)

But,.. I did listen to both of these and they sounded just fine, as live jams go. The band seems to be competent and it sounds like your studio work should come out nicely. I did like the git lick that comes in at 0:23 on "Spice". That was pretty catchy,.. but shortly after that it travels off into "jam" territory. As for the over-all recording itself.. well.. it sounded very.... live.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. I know live jams aren't most people's thing, but since I post so much and I needed to get learning I thought I should put something together. I'll definitely be looking your way for some advice on the studio tracks. Thanks again.
