Aspiring Idiot
If I get a mixer with firewire, when I record using 8 tracks will I get 8 indivual tracks in reaper/cubase/mixcraft? Or will all 8 channels be in one track? Current setup is tape out on mixer to line-in on comp and I obviously get all 8 tracks in one channel which kinda sucks, unless I wanna track everything separate (which works, except for drums and I'd like to have each drum part on sep. channels). Do the pros use FireWire?

Wouldn't it come down to how many ins and outs your sound card/ interface thing has?

If you get an 8-channel interface like a Motu 8Pre for example, you will get 8 separate tracks.

Firewire was designed to do multi-channel audio and video (which is much more bandwidth intensive than audio.)

I've used a Motu828mkII with a XP laptop and firewire drive for over a year with ZERO problems.

The description says that it sends every input to the computer. That should do it.
