hi. i'm a noob here so bear with me please...

so i'm about to buy my studio setup with mic pre's, compressors, power conditioners, blah blah

but i'm about to buy a focusrite saffire pro 40 and a yamaha 14-input mixer. now i know there's more than one input on the interface, but is this the best way to record if i put this into my mac?

the "proper" setup im having in mind is i would feed the mic and whatnot into the mixer, then feed the mixer output to the interface (basically have the whole mixer's output into a single input on the interface), and then through firewire, to the computer. is that right or is there something i have to fix in that process? or is either the interface/mixer completely unnecessary and you only need one and input the track into the computer some other way?

also, i don't like how the saffire doesn't mount on a rack... is there a firewire interface that does mount on a rack that is equal to or better than the saffire? i don't need the pre's because i already have separate preamps so ill never end up using the pre's on the interface. just a firewire interface that's very good for the firewire conversion of the signal

the mixer isn't necessary, first off. unless you need it for other things, like practicing with a band through a pa. the focusrite should be all you need, assuming you already have a daw. 2nd, why is it so important that it be rack mountable? 3rd, the focusrite is rack mountable. :) imo, situation depending, rack mounts can be bothersome.

well i guess i saved 1000 bucks for the mixer lol

as for the rack mountable...ness? lol of the interface, i have a desk that has a rack built into it (studio rta desks) and it would just be much more organized and convenient if all my interfaces were right in front of me.
but the saffire pro 40 isnt rack-mountable... it's nowhere near 19" long to fit a rack...

what's the best firewire interface (for around 1000 now since i know i don't have to buy a mixer)? like i said before, i don't need the most amazing pre's or anything else since i have that separately

ohhh okay.
i was kinda confused too because it looked like it was a rack mount interface. musician's friend's measurements were wrong. it said 13 inches lol -.-
yeah, it's rack mountable it's right on the focusrite site lol

so if i want to set up my condenser mic, would i feed it through the pre, then the compressor, then the interface, then the computer into my software? is anything missing from that process?

Have you put any thought into room treatment? We see all the time people spending TONS of money on equipment but never think about treating your room. There are lots of good ways on this forum to do this all yourself for pretty cheap. Definitely think about it!!!

Also I didnt see you put monitors up there? 2nd? most important thing after room treatment. Just 2 cents. Do more research before commiting yourself to all that money out the door. Will help in the long run for sure.
