I've been doing a lot of research, and have heard from audiomidi.com, for one, though I can't remember the others off the top of my head, (I might have inquired at sweetwater..?) that firewire drive enclosures with the oxford 911 chipset are preferable/necessary for audio recording because they enable simultaneous read/write, which other chipsets do not necessarily do.

At least I think that's the reason they gave. It's been awhile so I don't remember for certain.

Anyway, I have seen nothing about this on the homerecording bbs, and I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this?

What firewire enclosures do you use for tracking (Not backup)?

Yes, that is true. Oxford 911 chipsets are a must for audio drives.

www.macsales.com sell fantastic enclosures as well as complete drives. I highly recommend them.

They are not cheap, but they perform better than LaCie and Glyph.

Thanks for your reply.

But what specifically is it about the Oxford 911 chipset that is "a must for audio drives"?

And why don't I see anyone else mentioning this on the homerec bbs?

There appear to be many folks using other firewire hard drive enclosures.

Also, what do I have to look for in an enclosure besides the chipset? I see enclosures using this chipset for as cheap as $40 (Bytecc at http://www.dealsonic.com/bytme3idetof.html). Are there brands to stay away from? Why?
