Ok so i have two iMacs one a G4 and the other a G5 (none of this intel stuff)

any way the drives are filling up on both machines, so i think it is time to get a firewire drive now....

the best budget option seems to be go and buy a hard drive case with firewire and then a normal hard drive...

hte big box store in town sells all kinds of stuff.... my question is what to get?

Maxtor drives are cheap but are they any good at all?

is firewire 400 (all i have) fast enough? or is USB 2.0 fast enough?

i see these Maxtor hard drives selling at 100GB for $90 is this a good deal?

also any thoughts on an a hard drive box with firewire?

i am really new at this idea and need some help getting started thanks.

You will get a Much better deal on a Hard drive if you look on line (E-Bay or even TigerDirect)...You can probably get a 200gb Drive for $90 on line and then you just need the Firewire Enclosure....

Yes FW 400 is Plenty fast enough but DON"T get a USB 2.0 Drive as USB 2.0 is MUCH Slower than Firewire even though they try to market it that it is Faster....

The 3 Main Drive Manufacturers are pretty much equal in Quality (Maxtor, Seagate,WD) so any drive by these makers should serve you well, just make sure it is a Fast enough Drive and has a Large Cache (7200Rpm and at least 8mb Cache and be ATA/133 or SATA 150 or Higher and that your enclosure will be compatible)......

I have been running the Same 2 Maxtor Drives in my PC for several years now without any Problems (200GB ATA/133+120GB SATA).....

Cheers

the place i buy from seems to run deals every week and they may have a deal on 300 GB drives for pretty cheap it was like $125 at one sale....

the place is a lot like Tiger...

any way i will see what i can get....

Buy.com has a 250GB USB/FW external drive for $99 this week. No rebate either! Link to Drive

DO NOT GO TO BEST BUY FOR AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE!!!!!

Newegg.com usually has some good deals too!

If you have a Sam's Club near you they sell the 250gb Western Digital drives (8mb cache) for $99 and change.

But you have to pay sales tax and wait in line behind the mother with three kids, two shopping carts, and 30 pounds of chicken breasts :D
