Ive always been interested in buying a FMR RNP (as ive heard great things)....but using that with my Firepod am I going to see a noticable difference....i think i read somewhere that they were both considered comparable preamps....? Input, comments, suggestions, concerns....let me know!

Look at the price. Around $225 a channel for the RNP, or around $75 per channel. I would bet that there is a difference that is worth getting the RNP for. I can't really say, because I haven't used either, but just judging by that and the great reviews on this BBS, I would say yes.

The RNP is a great pre. Well worth the money. I haven't used the Firepod pres, so I don't know how they would compare, but my guess is that the RNP would be a noticeable improvement.

Does the Firepod have separate line ins? If not, is there anyway to bypass the preamps on the Firepod? If you can't, they will probably affect how much of an improvement you'll see by going to the RNP.

you can bypass the pre but only on one channel i think. i've never tried it yet on my firepod. to me, the firepod pre's are OK, nothing special though. the RNP would probably be a better pre.

The Firepod does fairly well on most things, but really shows it's ugly side on vocals. The RNP will definately sound better.

i 2nd the firepod is horrid for vox (imo), they have line ins for 2 channels in the back (once u use them channels 1 and 2 on the front are bypassed along with the pres). loud drums its not that great, but i do a whole different genre of music from a whole diff part of the globe, for string instruments and flutes it works great. just with my dhol drum it was almost too airy it seemed like, not enough warmth coming out of the pre's imo. but u can run line ins in 2 channels which can be a problem, but im pretty resourceful and pretty efficient in switching wires around...thats always a plus lol

Hey guys thanks for the input....im probably going to get the RNP eventually and use that for vocals and overhead drums and any other instrument itll sound good with now that I know i can bypass the first two channels of the firepod....

Re: firepod

Hey there. I own a firepod and am recording into Logic via my mac g4. I would say that I am fairly impressed with the firepod. I do not have an expensive mic pre but for the money, if recorded correctly with a good mic, the firepod is quiet and clean. Signal chain is important. Do it correctly and with this unit you should be fairly happy.
