Any suggestions as to how to decrease finger noise while recording acoustic guitar? I read a reference somewhere to Wesson oil, but I don't relish the idea of getting that stuff on my fingerboard.

Hmmmm!
Why do u want to get rid of it??
Thats just a characteristic of acoustic guitar listen to any profesional recording and u will hear fret noise!!
Its more to do with the way u play ur guitar!
If u dont like the noise then try playin with a guitar with Nylon strings!

Don't want to get rid of it, want to decrease it. (That's why I chose the word "decrease"). I usually don't mind it, but I'm trying to record the guitar for Bill Bragg/Wilco's "Birds and Ships." If you're familiar with it, you know what I mean. It's a simple melody played fingerstyle on a solo steel-string with Natalie Merchant singing. Very haunting and powerful. Problem is the guitar has to be heard and the slides can be too noisy.

You can try mic'ing a little more distantly. What I mean is, if you mic, say, at the 12th fret at 1', try going out even further. Or try behind the bridge.

Elixer strings with the Nanoweb (not an alesis product) help to reduce this considerablely, they also last longer.

Micing and playing technique seem to make the biggest difference for me. Some mics and positions will increase/decrease the effect.

You can also try compressing and play around with a longer attack time and shorter decay time to see if you can minimize it.

Try putting the mic at shoulder height facing down over the sound hole.
That's the only way I could get slide to sound good.

Dont put wesson oil on your guitar!!! If you want to put something on it use lemon oil. Its great for the wood, you'll be
supprised what a major improvement it will make to your old worn out fretboard. As far as finger noise, Darrin_h2000 had a great idea......Elixer strings are fantastic! If you play as much as I do your fingers will thank you for it and you just can't beat the incredible long lasting tone of a quality acoustic string.

I agree with mrbigputts, Lemon Oil is unbelievable for cleaning fretboards, returns them to new without feeling oily. And cleans away all that grunge from under the strings. Gets my vote every time.;)
