Finding the "sweet spot" for micing technique?

Ok, I should probably be more clear - I'm not specifically endorsing the idea of moving a single mic backwards until it's perfectly out of phase, flipping the phase on the distance mic, and then rocking out.
 because there's no way to move a mice back until it's perfectly in phase.

I AM saying, however, that if you think trying to get two mics positioned such that they sound natural together doesn't make sense...
that's a strawman. I'm not arguing that.

but I am saying that IME there are superior alternatives to physically aligning mics as to be able to use phase as a tone shaping tool

regardless, there's nothing from stopping one from doing their best when tracking to align mics, but it doesn't have to stop there. there's another whole world of tone and tone shaping post tracking with two mics using the benefits of phase.

Likewise, I'm not arguing that, lol.

Either way, I agree with the second half of what you posted - I don't necessarily know if I'd go with the use of your word "superior" there, since a lot of guys swear by (and get great results from) creative phase cancellation (i.e - it's not "better" or "worse," just another viable alternative, but it's certainly a pretty cool alternative approach, and definitely something worth experimenting with. :D
