Ok, I should probably be more clear - I'm not specifically endorsing the idea of moving a single mic backwards until it's perfectly out of phase, flipping the phase on the distance mic, and then rocking out.

that's a strawman. I'm not arguing that.I AM saying, however, that if you think trying to get two mics positioned such that they sound natural together doesn't make sense...
but I am saying that IME there are superior alternatives to physically aligning mics as to be able to use phase as a tone shaping tool
regardless, there's nothing from stopping one from doing their best when tracking to align mics, but it doesn't have to stop there. there's another whole world of tone and tone shaping post tracking with two mics using the benefits of phase.
