Ok, here it is y'all. This is my band's (The Geisert 8 Band) first "Single".....it's called "My favorite pillow". I did all the recording in my sax player's basement with 6 akg d770s, 1 SM57, and a AKG C1000. The only thing non "homerecording" about it is that this is off the album which we had mastered (which is a pretty good "homerecording" tip off this site). I'm supersuper pumped about this, and I'd like to hear anything you guys wanna say about it.

here's the actual band site if you'd like to check that as well.

Interesting...

Greetings,

Thats not bad at all.
I like the vocal harmonies...different.

Didn't like the distorted guitar that came it....sounded like it was from a diff song.

I noticed the reverb on the drums right away, a bit much i think

Good singing

Good song.

Like the vocal harmonies.

Good tones on everything (not the distorted guitar though)

I like it.

Distorted guitar...too...loud....

VERY nice sax solo....

Nice work

Distorted guitar works better near end....better placed in mix

good song..good ending

Mike,

In IMHO that is a very nice song to be proud of. I think that the Distorted guitar fits with the song just fine. I do agree with SirRiff that the Verb and Plate on the drums in the intro is way too heavy. When the songs kicks in, it mellows out a bit. But that intro needs to be a little more Dry or less wet. I guess it depends on if you are an optimist of pessimist. =). But I like the vocals and flow of the song very much. Thanks for taking the time to post it for us all to hear.

Like my dad used to say:

Son, You can sit around all day staring at that glass wondering if it is half empty or half full, or you can track down the bastard that drank your juice. =)

Hey guys,

thanks for the replies. About that whole drum reverb thing in the beginning. I dunno, I kind of felt that the drums needed something, so I made up a whole "drum verb" track in addition to the regular drums. I started out with the verb full blast and the regular drums quiet. I then faded the verb out and the regular drums in. It's really just an effect I was going for. Kind of like a digital "when the levee breaks". :) Thanks for listening.

the finished recording did end up fairly nice....good job. I agree...the reverb is a toooo....well....if it was flanged, in addition..or something a little cooler, the effect might work a little better. I agree about the fuzz gtr. It sounds ..just ok...an overdriven amp would be better...it sounds like a fuzz box of small coinage. the "whistle?" at 2:43.....kinda out of context and a little harsh too... great ending for the song.

I went to the band site....couldn't find the pictures link:( are they supposed to be there? nice mastering place.

Mike....

This is an excellent song!
I really liked it alot. :)

The only things I hear in the mix that I would change is the guitar (tube distortion would be better than that "fuzz" sound), the bass needs to be a bit more "punchy", and the vocals seem to dip in volume when you hit the low notes... making some of it less distinguishable from the rest of the song.

Other than that, great job!!!! ;):)

Hey guys,
I like the beat and the vocals are great. The sax solo is also pretty great. The only thing that I really didnt like was the whole whistle thing. Great Job!

Thanks for the replies. Any more? The whole whistle thing is like a staple in our music....not that every song has a whistle, but anytime a song on the album gets "too serious" we'll throw in a whistle or a hardcore scream or something to break the monotony. If there are any more opinions I'd appreciate it. Especially stuff on the mix itself and how it could be helped, if at all.

Thanks,
Mike

I like it when the vocal harmonies come in. Sweet.

Did you make it mono or near mono on purpose?

The reverb on the intro, did you put that there or was it the mastering engineer? It sounds like a plugin.

The vocals sound good, if a bit wet-noodley in the top end

I like you web page. I looked at your pictures. Was the mastering engineer actually using a computer and PLUGINS? I also noticed that his room was not treated. how much did he charge for the job?

Overall, a nice try.

I made it near mono on purpose. I only did the drums up stereo. Why? I didn't like the sound of the guitar panned. Things sounded better. Reverb on the intro is me. It sounds like a plugin because it is. Mastering engineer was using a computer base....analog path. I didn't get into details with him, cause what he did sounded good. we paid around 500$ for the album job from him. if you want to check out the good he was using go to www.colossalmastering.com .
