Final mix with sonar 2.2XL

Hi,

I am currently using Sonar 2.2XL with a mia sound card. When I finish a project and it sounds good, How do I take it out of there? I mean I export audio choosing the format broadcast wave and 16 bits. Now since I recorded in 24 bits I personnaly think it gives a weird sound to the project once burned on a CD. Unless going the analog way to dump on another computer how could I do it?

I would hit Ctrl+A (select all) and go File -> Export... ;)

I would choose another program to dither it down to 16-bit. Wavelab and SoundForge would do the job beautifully...
 
First you should choose the RIFF Wave format (unelss you specifically need broadcast wave for some reason).

Secondly, when dropping from 24 bits to 16 bits, you need to dither the file. Otherwise you will just truncate the extra 8 bits, and this can cause artifacts in the sound.

You can dither using Sonar (Options > Audio > Advanced > Apply Dither); however, Sonar does not have the best dithering algorithms available. Much better ones can be found in Waves (L1 or L2) or in Wavelab (Apogee). But if you do not wish to spend more money, you should at least use the one in Sonar.

So why not recording at 16 bits from the start? would the sound be better since no transformation algorithm would be needed?

If you just do record and play, you hardly can hear the difference between 16 & 24.

But, when you do alot of process on the wave, 24 bit gives you much precission. And you'll hear the noticeable result. Just IMHO.

Try to record an acoustic guitar with a good mic... The difference between 16 and 24 bit will never be clearer. ;)

Not that I'm aware of. Wavelab, though, does include the Apogee UV22 and UV22HR with version 4.0.
