Fifty dollar mics

I believe that it's the AT MB 1Kc isn't it?

The MB300L has very different specs to the 1kc and cost a fair bit more when new. It was the top of the line dynamic in that earlier series and none of the newer K series seem to refer to the specs of the earlier MB line. If there's anyone out there from AT that knows which current AT dynamic carries on this particular vocal character, please enlighten us

Here's the link for the 1995 SOS review. Audio Technica Midnight Blues

I guess we're drifting a bit off thread here but this was a mic I got for very little money that I think is exceptional

I exclusively use an AT MB3000L for my live vocals. I also use it in recording and it is great. The only thing I dislike is that they are fairly delicate. I also recently purchased 2 MB2000L's for about $20 each.
I also was wondering about what was the equivalent in the current AT line-up. I assumed it was the MB3k, but it almost seems that they have lowered the overall quality of the MB line. I haven't used any of the new ones, so I'm not sure. But, yes, I would love to know what the current equivalent is.

At the moment I'm assuming the MB3000L was a bit of a One-Off event.... but it's hard to imagine such a tasty mic as this not existing with another model number, somewhere else in the vast array of the AT line up.

Mikey,

You're right, that is a good sounding vocals mic. It works well with your semi raspy delivery. Very detailed. Nice song too.

Thanks,

Mikey,

Not off topic at all. The entire Midnight Blues series fits under this thread as they are one of the better budget lines of microphones. I found the MB3000L for sale here.

Audio-Technica Mb3000L Cardioid Microphone | Low Price Guaranteed | BROOK MAYS orders@brookmays.com

So you can see it's $100 new. Used has got to be less and you might find it new for less too.

The MB3K does not seem to be the successor to the MB3000L. The 3K is hypercardiod as opposed to cardiod and doesn't have quite as broad a frequency response. So you would expect the 3K to have less feedback problems on stage. The 3K is also cheaper at $69 retail.

Now, as far as whether the 3K is as good a mic with the detail and nuance of the 3000L you can't tell that by reading spec sheets. Has anyone tried one of these? It might be a good one too.

Thanks,

Hi Larry

Thanks for your positive feedback on the song.

I saw an MB3000L for about $60 new on ebay a while back so I guess there's some NOS out there still.

Did you ever get round to getting an ATR30 for $18 yet???

Not yet. I'm finding it everywhere for $25 shipped. Trying to get it under $20. Like I said it's a kind of a game with me. It's not like I don't have enough microphones.

And I will start looking for an MB3000L under $50. I really like that mic.

Thanks,

Larry,
An MB3000L just came up on Ebay. I haven't seen the bid change in a few days, it ends in 3. Doesn't seem to be much interest. You may be able to pick it up quite cheaply.

brother rat,

Thanks man, It's on my watch list.

For my ebay Christmas present I just bought myself a Shure 544 Unidyne III. It has a special connector so I paid extra shipping for the stand with the connector. I will probably wire up an XLR rattail.

I am really a fan of the Unidyne mics. I like them a little better than the SM57. More personality I guess. A little bit different.

An MXL 603s Pair can be had new for around $100, which puts each mic in the $50 price range. I've got a pair of these, and have had great success using them for drum overheads, and I've also gotten good results on acoustic guitar when pairing a 603s on the neck with an LDC on the guitar's body.

silentsky,

Yeah, these are good mics. I have one I used for over the shoulder acoustic guitar mic. I'm using my Pro37s now but they don't really fit in the $50 category.

The MCA SP1 is a very similar mic in a side address case also in the $50 category. MCA mics are MXL and the SP1 uses the same capsule as the 603s.

Both of these models are recommended for modding but I know very litle about that.

brother rat,

I won that mic. I was the only bidder. I'm still waiting on it so I can review it.

The Shure 544 Unidyne works good. The gooseneck stand included a large button to push to talk like a DJ would use. It was wired wrong so I disassembled it and wired the cable right. It came with an XLR end already wired to a cable and soldered to the switch. Anyway the gooseneck is attached to the mic and the wire comes out the end of the gooseneck. Weird looking but it works good. I saved the stand. It's a Shure S40A Desk Stand made by Shure Brothers, Inc. It says made in Evanston, ILL., U.S.A. Definitely old and cool. I could reassemble it and have a push to talk mic but since I do all my voice overs on computer I don't really need it. Still I'm saving it.

I guess playing around with weird stuff like this is a side benefit of looking for fifty dollar mics.

Thanks,

Great! Let us know what you think once you get it and have some time to test it out.

Ok, I thought of a couple more: the Behringer ECM8000. Good omni mic for room measurements, acoustic guitar, piano, drum overheads, etc. Also, the Behringer XM8500 isn't a bad vocal mic for live performances. Haven't tried them for recording though.

Mikey,

I got two MB3000Ls on two separate purchases. These are, in fact, very good mics. I posted this.

Promises | Blow Your Own Horn

I haven't had a chance to try them as vocals mics yet. Which is their intended purpose. But I'm impressed.

Also I have an EV Cobalt. It's a CO4. It was recommended in this thread and it's another good quality mic that's sold in the budget price range.
