this is somthing i remixed tonite. i have been trying to experiment
with eq. i am interested in hearing what any one might think of this mix. i just recently got a different monitoring setup. so i am
not too familar with the bass response of my system yet. before the mix was real boomy. i think i fixed it but i really dont know what it would sound like to some one who really knows their
monitors? any advise is welcome and appreciated! thanks, tim,

Not bad. The bass does kind of dominate the mix, and the drums seem to lose some of their ummph towards the end of the song. The vox sounds like it could come up a bit in the mix.

The vocals sound good and nice playing throughout.

Overall nice job. Maybe just some tweaking (possibly eq) with the mix a bit... :)

Exciting stuff!

during the " run for your life " part near the end I was almost expecting chanting vocals for a sec. Like a whole bar full of guys yelling it

if the bass guitar could be sidechained from the kick you might be able to get away with leaving it that loud.
The beginning is almost asking for the guitar to be panned one way or the other till the song comes in
The bass guitar needs to have more control over it both frequency and dynamically, there might be certain pickup pole pieces that need to be adjusted, as certain notes are much louder than others
LOTS of space that the guitar could take up higher, maybe giving the bass a chance to come up into the more present frequencies

how about some details on how this was recorded ?

I wouldn't call it boomy, but the bass sounds quite loud to me.

first of all thanks for listening and posting your comments.
its nice to get feedback that is honest.

pipelineaudio i will and have been wanting to learn how to side chain and now i am on a mission to do it! i use protools digi 001
so i do have the technology to do it.

as for the up and down with my bass player i have struggled with this before and havent found a solution yet. bass seems to be the
hardest thing for me to record and mix. any suggestions on evening the bass levels? or should i just try riding the faders?

pipeline here is how i recorded it. recorded the band live for that live feel. kept the drum track's that i close micked. eq'd out bleed thru as best as i could. then i overdubbed guitar thru a pod direct.
and the bass direct thru the amp output! i did the vocals with an
sm 57 because i was singing loud as hell and it seemed like a more controllable choice for me. did two vocal takes and just blended the two and a little reverb. mixed and remixed it a hundred or so times and walah! Tim,

"wanting to learn how to side chain and now i am on a mission to do it!"

this would be the PERFECT test case to learn it!

"as for the up and down with my bass player i have struggled with this before and havent found a solution yet"

mainly I would make sure to first get rid of technical reasons at the player/instrument/ amp part of it first...
Make sure the pickup polepieces are even
Make sure that tone controls on the bass or amp arent making some notes jump out, and others duck
With a stick or sharp object in hand, watch the bass player play and if he hits notes harder or softer, not out of a dynamic necessity, but out of laziness, WHACK him or poke him with it!

This sounds like a "hollow-ish " bass tone. Id use more mids during recording cuz you can always take em out later.

After all this, some distortion on the HI end only of the bass sound might make it stand out more, even at a MUCH lower volume

Im learning to sidechain also. The bass does have that live sound to it. I think the kick is coming out a bit to much. Its just going to take some time to eq and get it right. Listen to it on headphones, car stereo, boombox, and monitors. Try to get the mix to sound good on all of them....Make the bass player and the drummer follow a click track... This will seperate the men from the boys-lol I like the song. Good music.

rockin'

I'm a big fan of the big guitar sound...something like snapcase...where there is just a HUGE sound with nothing lost in the mix. As for mixing...and I'm far from good...I would say the only thing would be to bring those driving guitars out to drive the song with the drums. Then it would really kick ass! it kicks ass now...but you would be drawing blood in the mosh pit with the big guitars!!!
I'm diggin' it though!!
