Hi all,
am new to recording and this is my first post on the forum. Have had an FD8 for about 3 wks now, and am starting to pick up the basics, and bouncing etc. managed to get some great (impressive ) results with my electric, acoustic and bass guitars and my keyboard. Have even started experimenting with a boss sx700 studio effects processor, with some ok results. problem is,,,,,,, i have just bought an MXL 990 condensor mic, as this seems to be the begginers choice of studio mic, but i cant get a sound out of it ?? Now i know that technically, the fd8 doesnt have phantom power, BUT , i have been told that the fd8 will take any type of mic, regardless of phantom power or not. Hence my choice of mic. Have been told ( on another fostex forum) that you just have to alter the gain, and something about increasing the db, and you effectivly, get phantom power ?????
i am using the mxl, with an XLR to XLR lead, and have tried it in both the rear xlr inputs ( track 7 & 8 ), but still no joy !!!
It could be that i cant se the wood, for the trees, but i really could do with some advice and guidance with this issue.
I have given up on the "offical " fostex forum, you put a post up, or start a new thread, and days, sometimes weeks later, there is still no reply and sometimes no veiws.
This forum definetly seems to have more members, and lotso recent activity, so i think i will make it my new home.
many , many, thanks. kev

FD8 doesn't supply phantom power. Pick up a mic pre like an ART Tube MP. You can find those for very cheap and they sound good given the price. I got mine for $30.

Other option is to use an external mixer that has phantom. Or use an external phantom power supply.

you have too have the phantom power or the mic will not work. The 990's sound ok for a cheap mic I have two of them.
