Haha good thread! Here's my Favourite opening to a song. It's more than a few lines but oh well. For all you Canadians out there you'll recognize this Tragically Hip masterpeice!

"If there's a goal that everyone remembers,
it was back in 'ol 72

we all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger
all I remember was sittin' beside you

You said you didn't give a fuck about hockey
And I never saw someone say that before

You held my hand and we walked home the long way
You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr"

Boy your gonna carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time!

I havent listened to Abbey Road in a while, thanks for the reminder habitual!

Spoken as the intro:

Wrapped in a bloody sheet a squalling brat was carried onto the balcony and shown to the people with the ringing of bells; and it was War; and it had a thousand fathers… now there’s blood on the streets again….

Well to me most of these examples sound either trite or unispiring without the music. Yes even the Dylan line, sorry.

Personaly I don't have any favourite lines. Just favourite SONGS. Lets face it, most song lyrics don't stand up as 'poetry' on their own. They were never meant to.

It's funny, when someone always gives me an example of they consider a 'great line(s)' from a song my reaction is invariably 'So what'. I think it's because people have their favourite songs which meean something in their life and take favourite lines from those.

When song lines are stacked up against great lines from politician's speeches or religious/philosopher's writings they don't come close - until that is they are put together with the music, THEN they become very powerfull indeed.

There are exceptions of course...how about Blowin in The Wind by Dylan, which probably DOES stand as poetry in its own right?

Very true gylnb!
Its like, if you take an opening song line and read it as piece of poetry, it becomes a piece of poop.
And if you read a piece of poetry into a song without singing it, than the question on this thread would be something more as follows: What is your favorite opening poem line.
My reaction is like, `so what', as well. What a deep and interesting insight. Thanks glynb.
