Alright, my current favorite opening line of a song....

"Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're trying to be so quiet...We sit here stranded though we're all doing our best to deny it"

- Visions of Johanna, Bob Dylan

let's here some others...........

You wired me awake and hit me with a hand of broken nails.

-Rusty Cage by Soundgarden

Ooooh, there's so many I like, but this one ranks up there:

Her Father was a failure; her Mother was a comfort to her Doctor and her lawyer, and an Indian Chief..

- John Prine, Down by the side of the road

Oh, and this:

They all call me Mr. Softee, but my name is Tastee Freeze !

- Elephant's Memory, Baddest of the Mean (c.1970)

best opening line i've heard? i can't think of anything outstanding although Diamond and Rust starts off great with "i'll be damned, there goes your ghost again" but one of the best lyrical songs i've ever heard was macy's day parade by green day or maybe hurricane by bob dylan.

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now .....

Eagles...

Well I don't know if this is my favorite, but it came into my head quickly when I thougt about this...

"Shot through the hear and you're to blame, baby you give love a bad name" - Bon Jovi

I don't know why I thought of that one. I like Bon Jovi alright...but that is just one hell of a strong opening line and delivered very well in the song.

I'm not sure what my favorite is...I'd have to think about that for awhile.

His face, crusted in vomit.
His bowels released.

- Gwar

in a primordial SCREAM!, "why do you FUCKIN" care for me!" -archer of loaf!

ahh, another one. . . ., " i was born on the banks off a hot, muddy river, the child of one stupid, steamy night." - blind melon

Adam's Song (Blink 182)..

This lyric gives me the chills every time.... (Song is written as a suicide note.)

Actually a serious song, for these otherwise goofy bastards.

--------------
I never thought I'd die alone, I laughed the loudest who'd have known?
--------------

"This is the story of three Texas boys who were busy minding their own business when the angel of the lord appeared unto them saying...!" - Lift to Experience - Just As Was Told

"The world is a vampire" - The Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet With Butterfly Wings

I've got two...

From mainstream music:

"Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog where no one notices the contrast of white on white." - Counting Crows Round Here

From a song posted in the clinic:

"There oughta be a town somewhere named for how I feel." - Chris Harris It Ain't Easy Being Me (but it was a cover... he only wishes he wrote an opening line that cool. :p )

WATYF

"What is this that stands before me"

- Black Sabbath

"trust and you will be trusted, says the liar to the fool"

- Type O Negative

I've always been parital to this opener to Warren Zevon's Lawyers, Guns, and Money:

"I went home with the waitress
The way I always do;
How was I to know
She was with the Russians, too?"

But I think Power got it right when he picked Visions of Johanna. Dylan packed more great lines into that one song than many composers will write in their careers.

"The ghost of electricity
Howls in bones of her face,
And these visions of Johanna
Have now taken my place."

If we were selecting best stanzas instead of best opening lines, my vote would still go to Dylan for this gem in Ballad of a Thin Man:

"You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek
He walks up to you when he hears you speak
And he says, 'How does it feel to be such a freak?'
And you say, 'Impossible!' as he hands you a bone.
Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is,
Do you, Mr. Jones?

Superjudge

"I had an urge, to build a cage around the sun...I couldn't find a way to say no..."

Monster Magnet, Cage Around the Sun

"I was the champion of forgive and forget, but i havn't found the way to forgive you yet..."

Rites of spring-persistant vision

Not the best lyrics, but still my favorite opening line.

"Wakin' up I watch another sun go down, another day spent underground, in my world of pills.."

- Monster Magnet -- Melt from God Says No

Or

"Hey little cookie take a walk my way...
... I'd like to hear what you have to say - yeah..."

Also Monster Magnet Same CD song called Silver Future

- Tanlith -
