Anyone hear of a company called Norse. They made drums that were shaped like horns. When I was a kid a classmate of mine had a father that owned one.

Slingerland.

I love their 60's Drums.
I love my 1962 Slingerland kit.

In my opinion, they make the most versatile kits, regardless of your musical preferences.

Does anyone remember Fibes kits from the 70's.

I miss mine... :(

Peavey. Roland is good too.

I won't flame you for that, Darrin.

Peavy's name is such that people's bias against them will outweigh the fact that Peavy makes an excellent drum kit.
It plays beautifully, and it has some of the best materials & construction I have seen by any Drum manufacturer in years.

Hell yeah! I saw a drummer about 2 years ago who was playing a new Fibes kit. The kit had an amazing sound. He had purchased the shells only for something around 2 grand. It was in a classy Champagne Sparkle color, and it sounded really sharp and fat.

I also have a buddy who has a Fibes acrylic kit from the 70's. Sort of a smoky clear acrylic color. Never goes out of tune, but never quite sounds LIke Bonham either. Big, round and punchy, a very full sounding kit. Not super resonant though. He got it for around $400, obviously used.

Are you kidding??? I can still picture Billy Cobham attacking his clear Fibes set. Loved the look so much I went and bought a set of Vistalites, my first 'pro' set.

Had a set of Tama's and now Maple Custom's

I use GMS for my main set (maple). I also use a Yamaha Recording custom set(birch). I also have vintage 2 Ludwig sets. I also have about 6 snares. It's great to mix and match when recording.

I am no a drummer myself, but as an outsider I am definetely a Ludwig fan.

One of the drummers I knwo has the best sound I ever heared in his Ludwig drums: Lots of punch and this kinda oldish rasping sound. I simply adore those...

I don't know if the company has maintained it's integrity with it's most recent kits.... but I play an old Gretsch kit, and haven't looked back er, uh....forward, since. :D

Yamaha

I play one of Tommy Aldridge's former kits, a Maple Custom with Vintage Wood hoops, and I dare say, those Yamahas are the best sounding drums I've ever played.

I'll never let 'em go. EVER.

I like the theory on Yamaha making good drum sets so the drums must be good too.

Heres a question... I have been wondering....

What is the link between DW and Pacifica....

Are the Pacifics made by DW?.... and are they a slightly lower quality drum than the actual DW's?

Or is it the other way around...

I have been checking out pricing, and it's hard to find a set of "DW" drums... Im mostly seeing "Pacifica by DW"

Any help to clear this up is greatly appreciated.

Joe

Pacific drums have the DW name but are an introduction line drum. I don't think they are made in the DW factory either. Most likely made in the cheap factories of China, etc... Even the more "expensive" Pacific drum aren't that good. My advice is get a decent set of Mapex. Right now they seem to be the best drum for the mid-line dollar. Mid-line meaning not a beginner set and not a pro set.

Cool.

Thanks for clearing that up... Im gonna look at the Mapex...

(Just for fun, im not really buying anytime soon)

Bert,

I don't agree........ I play a Mapex Mars Pro kit (older with the through lugs) - a 7 piece kit - and they are as pro as anything you could by. In fact - when I bought them I was looking for a particular sound (we play everything from blues and jazz to alternative) and it came down to either the DW's or the Mapex...... I spent a week playing both kits and settled on the maypex only because I couldn't hear any increase in sound quality with the DW's - and I just hate paying an extra grand just for the name.

Here's some people who consider MAypex to be "pro" enough for them:

Brady Blade, Brady has performed with Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Jewel and the Indigo Girls.

Gregg Bissonette, Gregg has played with Joe Satriani, Gino Vannelli, Tania Maria, Brian Wilson, Robin Zander, David Lee Roth, Ringo Starr, James Taylor, Toto, Ray Charles, Don Henley, Santana.

He also performed for the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert and video.

I would call that "pro" enough for me.

The bottom line is that this is a very personal thing......... "what sounds good" is subjective - you can't make a machine to measure it.......

I love my MApex - but have owned (and loved) Ludwig - Rogers - Slingerland, Pearl....... I've played (and loved) Sonars and DW's........

BTW - The only thing I couldn't tolerate was the snare - but then again - I can't tolerate any stock snare except for Pearl..... so I own a number of their snares and loose anything else that comes along.

Take care all.......

www.ocdrum.com nuff said. Unless you are a signed artist or live in the OC area...you'll most likely be put on a waiting list of almost a year. (could be longer...last time I checked it was almost a year). This is the company Adrian Young (of no doubt) is partial owner of. I suggest you old folks check them out. They put almost all (if not all) other drum companies to shame.

Ya if you want to waste tons of cash and get what a company like Phattie drums could do for alot less.

My favorite companies right now are Phattie and Tempus.
