Thanx dtb.

chess, nice score with the 40-4. You've got cassette, Minidisc and 1/4" reel 4-track covered. That's cool. Whenever you come up with some stuff, I'd love to hear it. I'll be trying to work up some new stuff soon, too, as soon as I think up what it is, haha.

I want to do some recording on the 38/DX4D format, [1/2"/8-track/dbx], and also more on the 388, [1/4"/8-track/dbx]. If I get any really BIG ideas, I'll use the MSR24, [1"/ 24-track/dbx].

I have to rotate through my formats, otherwise I'd never use anything but my Portastudio. The cassette 4-track Portastudio format is so convenient, and the results I get are so good, that I'd hardly ever use anything else.

I have so much gear, that I have to keep it on rotation,... yikes! Strange, but true!

:eek:

Hey Reel,
What's up? What's a good price for a decent used 8 track analog recorder. Maybe all the formats you just mentioned. Just thinking.
It's getting time for me to go back to work to support my gear habit. he he he he

IMO, a great deal on a mint/clean Tascam 38 is $350.

Average may be $450.

>[greater than] $450 may be fair, but less favorable of a deal, on a Tascam 38.

============

For a mint/clean Tascam 38 with [2] DX4D dbx units, $500 is a very good deal.

============

For a mint/clean TSR8, [1/2" 8trk w/built in dbx], $500 is a very good deal, $650 is average.

============

A mint/clean M30 mixer, average, is $125-$150.

============

RC71 remote, average, $125.

============

DX4D dbx unit, separately, avg $99-$125/ea.

Currently, you can get an MSR24 for about $2100, which is a great deal.

But, with anything analog, these days, the longer you wait, the lower the price will go.

Of course, with Ebay, there's shipping cost, and sometimes damage of heavy units in shipping, depending on how well they're packed by the sender. Most advantageous is to score a good Ebay deal within pickup distance. That's not necessarily feasible, depending on where you live. Good luck.

Reel, funny you mentioned the "rotation" system, my thought also on
using the various formats available to me.
Having the Teac 40-4 reminds me of getting a big Great Dane as a pet.
Lots of food (maintenance) and a large yard (garage)!

What really is amazing is how CLOSE the cassette portastudios "spec"
out compared to their big brothers. At 7 1/2" inches per second the
40-4 reel to reel only has a good frequency response up to 15Khz,
without the DBX unit engaged (15 ips is another story though!).
Another great thing about the portastudio design is the "direct out"
feature so that you can even take your tracks to a pro studio for
mixing and mastering.

Hmmmm-AS I was saying-

Before I was interrupted; In my utterly MOST highly regarded PROFESSIONAL opinion, the 424MKII is the BEST because , [after endless HRS. of advanced technical studies and trials], it is BLUE in color! Thank you , thank you , thank you.
My work must continue on as I find it necessary to depart now from yous.

I meant the MKIII

CRITICAL UPDATE!!!!!!!!
I meant the 424 MKIII. I forgot an I, probably due to this current scientific workload burden I carry.

REEL, Where u bin??

HEY REEL,
What's up? Never heard from ya. Did you get my letter or are ya mad at me cause the sum was to lil"?
Let me know.
Your Friend,
TOMMY.. ..

TOMMY,

Lately, I've been working on some non-web projects, so my regular bbs posts are a little less often. I have unending chores, yard work, etc, a family and my day job.

Davemania cd production has been moving along, with my 98th set just shipped. #100 is just around the corner. Davemania could hit 100, virtually overnight. I could concieve of going just over 100, if demand is still there. Monty's cds seem to have gotten lost in the mail, so he'll get another one. [I'll have to do a headcount]. Anyway, point being, that you've seen less of me 'cause I've been doing yard work, and working on the Davemania cds, which BTW I've spent a lot of time on,... more than you'd think.

Oh yes, I got your letter about a week ago, and thanx very much. Since you sent a hand written letter, I was gonna send a hand written response. I'm glad you got some tunes down to CD, and I'd like to hear them someday. Good with luck recording and everything else. Hang in there. I'm glad some of my advice helped you. Thanx for your positive comments, and I'll post a letter to you soon.

:) Your friend, Dave.

I'm not going to vote because I've only 3 of those on the list. I own a 424 MKII, my ex-roomie had the 414, and an old friend of mine had one of the fostex models. I'd like to bump a 424 MKII to a MKIII for a comparison. But to choose a fave between a 424 and a 414? That's like choosing between a SUV and a Toyota Corolla... anywhoo....

Great post. I love my 424 MKII and have used for everything from recording live gigs, over-dubbing, film scoring, film dialog, radio spots, stand-alone mixer, blah blah blah blah...... great value. I only wish I could slave it to a sync source. Setting as the master is all fine and dandy, but I don't like losing a track and it would be nice to have it chase for once! again, anywhoo....

Actually, my favorite 4 tracks are 1/2" 4 track mastering machines I used to work on...Studer and Otari. ;P

I bought a Tascam 424 Mk III and like it. I'm still a green horn but I'm starting to get much better but I spend a lot of time on it .
I have a Akia 12 something of a friend of mine and it uses a 1 gig jaz disc 6 track simo. recording but in all honesty I can't get as good as a recording on it that I can on my 424 maybe it's me but the 424 is easy to use and using comp. EQ, and reverb or other effects I can get nearly as good as a lot of recording studio's and better than some I've heard. I like to mix down to a cd recorder and go to my comput. and us a program called studio 7 to clean it up a little by cutting of the beginning and the ends maybe adjust a vol. then send it to roxio to space the songs and burn it on cd. Then I sale them at singings . When I done my first one on the Akia 12 nobody said it was good or nothing but this last one I did on the 424 the're still coming and telling me how good the quality is .
Any way that's my vote .

That's cool man. The 424mkIII and MAGIX Music Studio v7,...

then to Roxio. That works for me!;)

TASCAM 644 MIDIstudio.
I used to have one of these...loved it.

Still got my trust 244, it doesn't seem to want to die, though its on its second head.

Old beast, very heavy, nearly indestructable. I'd say I've enjoyed my money's worth!

Tascam 424MKIII Is by far the best 4 track

Yea this was my first recorder. I've used mine so much. I works great and sounds good. If anyone wants to hear some crapmaster songs email me.

tascam 464

...is there any reason nobody has mentioned the 464? i've been told by folks who know much better than me (i think) that the 464 is the best machine that tascam ever made in a 4 trk cassette deck (predecessor to the 424 with better pre-amps, maybe?). i'm no expert... i've done lot's of recording (or should i say played on lot's of recordings...i'm no engineer) on analog 1 and 2 inch machines, and more recently protools and cubase. i'm looking for a good 4 trk to do pre production on here at home, and i don't like computers much. any ideas are very welcome.
thanks- jv
