Fake Drums. How bad is it?

One guy mentioned K.I.S.S. and brushes.

I mentioned it, I didn't suggest it. I mentioned as an example of one type of hand percussion, hand percussion being one of three different approaches he might consider taking if the drum track didn't work out. It was a 'feel free to think outside the box' thing.

I can't believe how subjective that is.

What's wrong with subjective? It's the only point of view I've got. Where can I get another one? I can't believe how shortsighted your comment is.

Perhaps I came off as too cynical towards others. I was only emphasizing the cliche. Perhaps I shouldn't have said "glad," but I was glad he's not following through with everyone's opinions. I like to stick up for what I do. If some people don't like it, I shrug it off sometimes. If everyone doesn't like it, then that's something I will fix.

Yeah, that's right. You have to learn how to trust your own ideas and hunches. But equally, there's nothing wrong with considering other people's ideas, especially if you've gone and posted something and said 'whatcha think about this?'

Exactly. I did come here looking for constructive ideas on how to make it better, and generally speaking, I've gotten some great feedback. If I completely ignore everyone, what's the point of asking in the first place? I also understand that programming drums is new to me, and I need help. Of course everyone won't agree on which drum mix sounds better. I at least think I have it now to the point where it is not distracting, and performs it's function of keeping the beat going, and helping to drive the song along. I actually liked the idea of bringing the drums in later, and used that in the latest mix (I partly like that idea because it means fewer measures that need drums programmed). I'm still thinking about trying to do a mix with a djembe or a cajon instead of programmed drums, just to see how it would sound.

FWIW - I loved this thread. I pretty much love all positive, collaborative style WIP threads. I will take another listen now. I myself tried for several hours, on two different occasions (in vain) to play drums for this track for zero, and came up with nothing. So in my case I had a really strong opinion and ideas , but nothing to back it up with

Yeah, kicking in the drums halfway through the track is very good. The drum part still isn't there quite, but you'll pick it up in a couple of months or a couple of years and do it right. Tell you what though - I woke up this morning with this piece of music in my head and really liking it and it only took me five second to ID it. It's a really good song.

I ended up just trying to keep the drums out of the way of the song. I do think it sounds better with than without, which was the goal originally. Plus I think it's way better than where I started. Thanks dobro.

Oh yeah - good point - this track is a real earwig. I've had it stuck in my head since the first time I heard it.
