What is the difference between F-Spaced humbucker pickups and regular humbucker pickups?

F-spaced pickups have their pole pieces spaced so they line up under the strings on a Fender guitar, where as a regular humbucker is spaced to line up under the strings on a Gibson guitar. This is important, as the magnetic field is strongest directly above the pole piece, so having them appropriately spaced improves the balance of the strings.

I am using two Dimarzio Evolutions in my Ibanez RG270DX electric guitar which has a Basswood body.

The evolutions I am using are the DP159BK and a DP158BK (Regular not F-Spaced). I believe my Ibanez should have an F-Spaced pickup in it. Even though the Evolutions should be a high gain pickup, I do not notice anything different from medium output pickups and find the Evolutions rather muddy sounding. Could the the problem be due to the use of regular pickups rather than the F-Spaced? What kind of difference will I notice if I switch to F-Spaced Evolutions?

Your guitar probably would be better balanced with F spaced pickups, but I don't think that is your problem. What you are describing sounds more like you don't like your pickups. F-spacing would balance the level from string to string better, but that is all.

As to whether or not you need F-spaced pickups, look at the bridge pickup, and look at the strings and the pole pieces. Are they all lined up about the same? If so, then you have the right pickups. If the middle ones are lined up, but the out side pole pieces are inside the "E" Strings, then you need F-spaced pickups.

But like I said, if you don't like the TONE of the pickups right now, then getting F-spaced pickups would make no noticeable difference.
