I know I busted your balls about doing shit like this but it's real good and right in line with your well defined style.I liked Tom's kettle drum idea, too.I hope that new place inspires more great tunes and now that you have sunlight maybe...nah,forget it.

Hey Sam,
Good to see you back!

Catch this one on Fri AM or Sun PM....gotta crash.

Ralph

hi. this is a pretty cool piece. have never heard anything like it before. and that guitar-ish sound is pretty neat. is that what you called the "ebow?" is it really a electronic violin or something?

anyway.... my criticism is that the piano at the beginning stands out too much. it sounds too clean. the background stuff you have happening sounds reverby and distant, while the piano just sounds too clean. i don't think the sounds match each other well. maybe you should put some heavier reverb on the piano or something. or maybe use a totally different piano patch. this patch sounds really sweet, but i don't think it's appropriate for the dark tone of this piece. i think it's too bright.

don't have much to say about the composition itself. sounds fine to me.

but anyway... cool stuff. i like it.

In the last 2 weeks Ive been pissed on more times than I care to recall

I hear ya G, and I don't even have any children..

dtb - thanks Dan.. sometimes the slow jam is more fun..

fenderlikingood - rick-in-the-house! thanks bender!

M.Brane - I agree, moving does suck.. also agree about the lows.... I didn't put too much time into mixing this.. It was kind of spur of the moment.. I'll mess with it some more.. thanks Brane!

boydrj - agreed about the drums.. I was originally just using that as a metronome, but I un- muted it at the last second.. another patch would be better.. thanks dr.j!

Toki987 - thanks Toke.. still exploring the new boundaries of the new place..

DougH - thanks Doug.. Yeah it probably would make a good intro for something heavy if I shaved it down..

jcmm - I ran out of time yesterday, but I'll be in touch after work today.. thanks!!!

Stratomaster - it seems that bottom heavy thing is official.. Normally it's just my women, now it's spread over to my mixes.. :D Thanks Strat!

W.I.S.C. - buy a bag!

flat-9 - thanks for thinking of me flat!

Orpheus - here's a link to some EBow info http://www.ebow.com/test/newtest/index.htm You may have a point about the piano sound.. I was going for the feel that the piano was envoking something.. Like the longer I played, the louder the voices got.. thanks for checking it out!

thanks again doodz!

One thing about your mixes is that they always have this great balance among frequencies. Great lows, but not too much. Great mids, but not too much. etc. Cool sounds on this one.

Unless you want to add some vox, I can't come up with any ideas to improve it... Real drums maybe?

As for the music... Please don't go "John Tesh" on me.

LOL! You just gave me a really great idea for the next challenge!

Cool tune Sam. You say this was just noodling around?

If you're going to be whacked out, this is a better way to go about it. Very pertinent to the topic of the day.

John Tesh Rules!

thanks for checking it out guys!

yeah twist, this was just noodling around.. I was just jamming some keys over the drum beat and just letting it record.. As soon as I heard something, I started over and just recorded it as I went.. It only took a few hours.. The piano took about 15 minutes.. On average, there were about 3 punches per each piano section. The voice pads were two layers.. Each layer was played with both hands.. I used a Roland XV 20-20 for most of the sounds.. The drum sounds were a Roland TD-8 sound module programmed with Fruity Loops..

Triple M - I have been in mello mode lately.. Maybe it's the new place.. It's so much more peaceful here than at the other joint.. I really must get back into some heavy stuff..

Khompewtur - 'whacked out.' I'll take it!

thanks again guys.. :D

I listened to this again and it's very well done. Some very special little things going on here and there if you listen close, like the closing guitar riff.

Mix seemed a little bottom heavy to me. I could have heard more of that sparkling piano.

Hey Sam,nice tinkling of the ivorys man.
I dig the E-bow and Mid-Eastern drums,a perfect fit.
The E-bow sounds like a synthisized zitar.:D
Cool voice sounds.

Hope your enjoying the new place.
Good luck!

Pete

Outstanding ambience.....

balance is really good.............

excellent choral patches man..................

sticks sound good................

tinklin' the ivorys....good performance man....

Great mix.....................

I dig this music...it is something different from you man...

Take it easy Sam,
Joe

First off............glad to have you back man......this place isn't the same without you.
Hell, we even had threads about "Where's Sammi?" :D

Man.......I'm ordering an E-Bow first thing Monday morning.
I'm tired of hearing this awesome sound that fits right into my ideas and can't get it. It's so very cool!

OK...........I like the hell out of this (so you'll probably never do anything like it again! :D )
Piano sounds good to me......ok, here come the monks........oooh....cool percussion ideas.............well obviously this is a free-form piece. I'm guessing just turn on the recorder and GO....it's an example of how far you've come, that you can just throw something like this down and have it sound so good.
I didn't find the low-bass to be too much on my speakers........might mean I have crappy speakers but over here it was fine.
Nice one......I've saved it and if you take it down, I'll just put it right back up......and up......and up.... and up.....and up.....and up.........

I should clarify my bassy statement.
I thought the mix was balanced, but the low mid synth stuff was very dominating giving the song overall a bassy feel.

Hey "whacked out" means like far out in a good way. Anyway, it's a good thing you made here.

I didn't listen for mix purposes, but it looped for about an hour while my wife and I folded clothes and rounded up kids and cooked fajitas and stuff. No complaints from anybody under the age of 14.

So here's my "laid back" review of your work.

Well Done.

Your fly's open!!

-Chris

"had to d/l for later listen....I'll be back!! ha!" ..have to take out the trash, or something..

I heard the gtr player from Cold Play use an E-Bow, he aint no "Sam" but it sounded pretty darn good. Lows seemed a bit heavy to me at 2:20 and above..but it's been dry around these parts, so take that with a grain:D

Nice piano sam,

I love the thick textures, homogonous layers and fun you had with this as it is quite apparrent esp w/ the ebow!

It took me all over the place on each listen on each listen to a different scape in the imagery part of my mind. Deception galore and emotion abounding!!!!!

Entire mix needs attention on velocity levels but each individual patch was full and rich except for the 'thin' percussion sound.

@:07,;0:10, I would have let the piano ( forget that , at ALL ending notes of the rubato piano melodic phrases, Let the beautiful tone linger........ as I thought you may have rushed into the next phrase to soon! Savor the beauty man,..... it is apparent on the destination tones of each phrase! Very nice! "Milk 'em"

All in all ............very, very

peace,
Ralph

well after that flat -9 review ...i wont bother with "tekneecul" type stuff...(i cant anyway)..lol...but this was totally NOT what i expected to hear ...at least that first section ..i got so used to the "easy feeling ........then.....KABOOM THE HEAVY KICK YOUR TEETH IN " sneak job ...:D i mean it gets a little heavier ...very cool actually ..the piano sound is real good i thought..kicks the shit outta my "casio groove1000"...thats for sure..the swelling bass notes ...around 1:09 i like the shit out of that !!!..

shopping ebay for an ebow...

jamal!

Hey man! When did you get back?LOL.I didnt know you had a song on the board.I dont catch a whole lot of tunes these days. It's crowded like a mugg up in this joint!

Piano playing at the begining sounds sweet. Is all that weird guitar stuff done with an e-bow?I think they just came out with a new e-bow.I might have to check into that. The synth patches sound pretty cool........so how's the new place treating you man?I finally got that midi stuff figured out that you helped me with.......ended up what I wanted to do sounded like ass so I just stuck with the sounds in the Roland and Yamaha......that was a short tune.I didnt even have a chance to shoot the shit.LMAO!

Cool tune Sam.I hope you can find a creative groove in the new pad.Are you renting a space to record in or are you tracking in the new place?

Later dude!
