How many input/output channels do you need?

Do you want it to have built-in preamps?

We get a couple of these "what interface" questions a day so you should be able to scour the Newbies forum for all kinds of info.

Yup

You're right. One input at a time. Mic, 1/4 inch and hopefully midi. I need phantom power.

Ok, Riddle me this:

M-Audio Fast Track Mk II vs. Tascam US-144 Mk II. Which is better? Why?

The Tascam has two mic preamps. The M-Audio appears to have one. Both have direct monitoring (a good thing), but the Fast Track one has been "simplified" (made cheaper to manufacture) leaving the US-144 MkII with the advantage. On features I'd go with the Tascam, but things like sound quality and reliability may change the balance.
