Export wave files to PC from 2424 only SCSI??

I need some good advice here...

I have read the manual over and over and really bummed about the FAT16 thing. My goal is to transfer wave files from the 2424LV into a PC to edit via software like Acid or something like that.

SCSI - do I have to buy the Plextor 121032s External drive, can I go right from the 2424 straight in (I think the VF16 can), and will this drive act like a normal CDRW if I want to use it that way too? (I am not very good with the inside-computer stuff)...the following topic addresses it for the VF16, is it also valid for the 2424.....??

Or, can I buy an ADAT PCI card or sound card with only one lightpipe in and one out and transfer tracks 1-8 then move it to 9-16 then 17-24? Or do I need the just buy an expensive interface like the Hammerfall that has 1-24 in and out?

Is it worth it to spend that kind of money or just go SCSI?

I don't think the 2424 can burn to a scsi CD burner. But don't quote me on that. Cheapest route is get a SCSI HD, SCSI Orb, SCSI Jaz drive, off of ebay. Make sure they come with a SCSI card for the PC.

Next best route is the ADAT lightpipe route. I personally prefer that route because you can sync the 2424 to the PC and transfer tracks to and from the PC all in sync. The Terratec EWS88D will give you 8 channels of adat plus spdif plus 2 midi connections all for under $200. The EZ8 from Event is a little cheaper. For even less money, look for some older cards like the Korg 1212, Creamware Pulse, Frontier Wave Center, and the Sonorus card.

just to clarify the lightpipe stuff

Thanks....I like the sound of your lightpipe idea sounds like a lot quicker transfer...just to clarify, though...the terratec can import 8tracks to my PC (XP pro) at once, then for the next 16 all I have to do is move the lightpipe to the next slot (9-16...17-24) in the 2424 and then export those the same way?

Will the PC get confused with Tracks 9-16 after I just exported 1-8 or is it a simle task like renaming the

This will mean I will have 24 wave files on my PC that once I drop them into say my SForge Vegas Video (the price was right but any other suggestions for software like Cubase for editing?) they will all line up correctly?

Forgive my 'noviceness' I don't want to buy something and it ends up being wrong.

It depends on the program and how you have it set-up. But most programs are pretty good about default naming conventions. I'm an Nuendo user.. Cubase SX is very similar to Nuendo. What I did was create a template with 24 tracks that correspond to my ADAT inputs. Then it's just a matter of arming/disarming in Nuenod which tracks I'm recording to from the HD unit. I also name all of my tracks before recording so that the PC will name the files at the time creation. Even if I don't name them, Nuendo appends a "take" number to each pass so that you never get file name duplication unless you do it on purpose. Nice little safety feature that is... Cool Edit Pro does that also.

I've used SF Vegas Video quite a bit. It works great for editing/mixing. The only advantage of Cubase would be extensive midi capabilites. HOWEVER! You may want to verify that Vegas is capable of MIDI syncing with the HD unit. I can't recall if it is or not because I didn't use Vegas for that purpose. MIDI sync capabilites are the key here... that is what will allow you to transport multiple passes from the 2424 and keep them all in sync. Otherwise, you'll have to manually nudge the tracks to get them to all line up. Not that big of deal when dealing with a digital source. It's a major deal when dealing with an analog source because tape transports wander.
