And this is the place to get it!!!

I have come to be in possesion through a trade of a brand new Oktava mc-12 mic. --- but I need two for stereo micking my acoustic.

Do I just buy another one? ---
sell it and buy a "Matched pair?"

OR sell it and buy a pair of somenthing else
Some good deals on marshall 603's on ebay.

I'm all about matched pairs - However, most of the Oktava's in the same series are reasonably "in the ballpark" - At least the ones I've used.

That being said, it depends on the stereo technique that you're using - If you're going X-Y, it's going to be more important than if you're doing the "Big Guitar" soundboard/neck thing, where you'll probably be looking for two different sounds anyway.

I use one MC012 and one MXL603s in various configs (inlcuding XY) on my acoustic guitar, and I think it sounds great. However, if you can sell it and then afford a matched pair of MXL603s with the shockmounts and aluminum case for $199, that would be nice.

Riccol,

Considering that according to the last rumors Oktava 012 may become obsolete (at least in GC, where you can handpick them) I would not be in a hurry to get rid of one you have. Although I don't own 603, from the reading I assume it is a different sounding mic. Last week I had a recording--piano classical music, I made on a brand new concert grand 9' Bosendorfer. I recorded it with MS setup with Mid--modded Oktava 012, and Side--custom tube mic I built around Neumann KK87 capsule. I choosed this setup in given conditions over two modified ECM8000 with Jecklin disk; ribbon mics I made specially for this recording (and posted pics here); and as always, borrowed from my friend a couple of B&K 4011's, as a reference. I would suggest you to get and listen to 603 first, compare to 012 (even in mono), and only then to decide what to do.

if you absolutely want a matched stereo pair, id sell it and put it toward a matched pair of 603's which go for $199 new.....

however, for acoustic, i like different mics for double micing acoustic, like a LD out front and a SD over the shoulder......in that case, keep that puppy........

I agree with the logic of using matched pairs, but isn't talking about matched pairs with $200 mics kinda like running a Great River pre into a cassette PortaStudio and worrying if you should have used Mogami or Canare cable????

LOL... now that was funny... I needed that lol, now I can turn this computer off and get back to work.

I would take my MK-012 with me to the music store and test it along side all of the ones they had using the great tips that Harvey gave in this thread . Should get you close enough for recording acoustic guitar since, like it was stated above. you will really be looking at two different sounds anyway. Most likely one mic will be looking at the 12th fret and the other at the sound hole or bridge.
This will also let you see how good the mic you presently own is in comparison to the others.

Blessings, Terry

Bingo.......That's what I would have said. (I was acyully typing it when I went back to check for Harveys post and saw that one)

Thanks, wise, insightful, advice helped

I'll just keep it, maybe pick up a 603 -- that will let me compare ---

but let me get this straight ,-- I should not be running my Great River pre into my little fostex 4 track ---

How does that Great River compare to my Audio buddy???

Always get great advice here but I always expect the obligatory condesending ones and actually enjoy them very much!

Think of a Lamborghini Countach compared to say, a Yugo.

I'd bet over 50% of the people here wouldn't be able to tell the difference between something tracked with an AB and a GR.

Not saying there's not a differene, because there obviously would be. Just that I'd bet that the majority -- as in over 50% -- wouldn't be able to appreciate it.

Sad, isn't it?

This is home recording. Why don't you go hang out with the big boys and spare us your condescension.

Oh, you can't hang with them because you're not a big boy yet, and they might treat you mean?

uhhh, I was joking about the audio buddy --fostex --Great River comparison, ----

good point though about many folks being able to tell the difference. --- I'm just beggining to appreciate differences in mikes and the few pres I have listened to. So I keep learning and listening real real real hard!

I can however quickly identify the difference in price!!! ----Sooo looking for a step up from the Yugo to maybe something like a-------- Mazda Miata --- (Used of course with low mileage -- and from a smoke free studio!)
trying to find out what pre fits that mold --- seems it goes from Yugo to --- Mercedes or at least Audi! --not much in between.

:D :D Crazydoc, why don't you go talk to your counselor and spare us your neurotic insecurities. My statement was in no way a knock on you or anyone else.

But I suppose just because you're paranoid doesn't necessarily mean everyone's not out to get you.

Well, your statement "Sad, isn't it" just set my asshole detector off. If that isn't a knock on the folks here, then what does it mean?

I dont think crazydoc is being neurotic.....he actually nailed my exact thoughts.......

and you fall into your same routine everytime someone confronts you on your condescending attitude......if they go against you they must be crazy or in a bad mood,etc.......

I agree you need to go with the big boys if you feel you are above this BBS......

Frankly I think a few of you are trying to fill sonusmans footsteps and it just aint happening.....the condescension is there, but the skillz just aint......
