Has anybody had a chance to compare any of these with the SM series? Specifically the 57s? The PG series is about half the price, has a similar frequency response curve, and has a wind screen, but anybody actually used them?

I hvae some PG drum mic's...not toooooo bad... not the best but they do a decent job... I would reccmend the beta's though if your loking at shure...

anybody else? I agree on the beta's. They're great. I'm just looking for a cheaper substitute to the SM57s and was hopefully that these sound half as good.

I bought two PG58 mics hoping they would be good enough for live vocals.

There is a noticeable difference between the two PG. One of the PG58 sounds virtually identical to my SM58. The other PG58 is weak, almost like it is defective.

I note the SM58 has a transformer in the mic capsule, where the PG58 do not. I won't buy any more of the PG series, because they aren't that much less expensive than careful shopping on eBay for SM series.

I saw elsewhere here that the PG56 are very good for toms.

If you are looking for a cheap alternitive to the SM57, try a used pawn shop 57, or one from a used dealer. they will sell them for $50 usually.

I have tried the SHS knockoffs and I think they have promise.

There really isn't a cheap alternative to an SM57. Nobody should by one new....ebay my friend, ebay.

:)
