I apologize for being so vague in my post about my midi problem.
A few things that may be useful to know - I have Sonar 2.0, soundblaster audigy platinum, and win xp. I was messing around with the ports and ins and outs of the midi yesterday and I managed to have it all working, even the metronome. That was only for a split second though. I shut sonar off and re-entered it to see if all was still well. To my dissapointment it wasn't. I think it's just a matter of choosing and matching the right things. I've screwed with it for hours since that and haven't made any progress. So, whatever I did that one time is a mystery to me. I hope that the info I gave out is enough to help anyone soleve this with me.

thanks

Maybe if you understand what the MIDI devices are it will help you see what's wrong.

In the MIDI Outputs list, there should be at least one entry that looks something like

SB Live MIDI Synth

With the SB Live there were two, an A and a B.

This is the on-board hardware synth chip, which loads sounds in the form of Sound Font-format files. If you route the output of a MIDI track here, this is what will respond to the MIDI messages; its sounds will come out the SB Live's Line Out.

There will also be something like

SB Live MIDI Out or MIDI UART Out.

This is the MIDI interface, which can be used to direct MIDI messages from SONAR out to external MIDI devices. If you have no external MIDI instuments you wouldn't need this.

The metronome sends one MIDI Note On message per tick out to the designated output device. This is independent of what the project's MID tracks have their outputs assigned to. You can direct the metronome to the SB Synth, and the hardware synth chip will play the tick; or you can direct it to the MIDI out port and whatever you have hooked to the other end of a MIDI cable listening for MIDI messages can respond to it and play the tick. (Unlike the MIDI tracks themselves, the metronome can also be set up to play out to the PC speaker, the little speaker built in to the PC case -- the thing that beeps when you turn the computer on-- but this is usually not a good choice.)

The MIDI Inputs for your tracks should just show MIDI Channel numbers.

This is the input port, where, if you had an external MIDI keyboard or other MIDI controller, you would route its MIDI Out to so you could receive MIDI messages from it on the computer in SONAR.

The MIDI messages are sent from the keyboard or controller on one of 16 MIDI channels. The track you want to record MIDI messages on must be set to receive messages on the channel that they are being transmitted on. Or, you can set iot to OMNI, in which case it will pay attention to any MIDI messages coming in on that port regardless of channel.

Finally, for the devices to respond they have to be on and enabled. In the case of the SB MIDI Synth, it must be selected in the Outputs list under Options -> MIDI Devices. In the case of a remote MIID instrument listening to the MIDI output, it must be set to respond to incoming MIDI messages on whatever channel it is being sent out on.

AL,

This is the multiple poster about the same problem.....

I said something similar to your post here: no midi

Then there was the follow up...: replies would be appreciated

Ebicaneezer, you need only reply to the earlier posts, no create new ones... it creates confusion!! ... plus takes longer to answer the questions.

I'll try your suggestions

I am fairly novice at the whole recording thing. However I am extremely keen on learning all i can about it. I appreciate the insightful replies that all of you have send my way.

thanks,

Ebi

There are a number of things you need to set up correctly:

Windows mixer
S/Blaster audigy soundcard
Sonar audio and midi
Your song
Each track

All of these interact with each other and affect how you record and playback...or not as the case may be.

Try simple stuff first and work from there. Home recording is a very complex beast, not understood in a couple of sessions. There are so many variables, boxes to check, "things" to list and highlight, its a wonder anybody ever gets to record anything:eek:

thanks

Thanks to all of you for your help. I seem to have things working at the moment.
