I got Big Star's first 2 albums and what I've heard so far I like. I actually saw Robyn Hitchcock live several years ago. I've never heard of the other bands you mention, so it looks like I'll have to do some more shopping!
On this track I used Izotope's Trash plugin. It's a new toy, so I wanted to try and get used to it. I think it's actually very good, it's just that I'm not very good at using it.
I also have Cakewalk AmpSim (which I don't think sounds very good) and Revalver SE (which came with SONAR). It's OK, but I haven't been able to get any sounds from it that I really like. I'll give it another shot. I liked the guitar sounds on your track, so it's obviously possible to make it sound good if you know what you're doing!
I think you're right, though - better use of EQ is what's really needed.
