2 - When you're there, you absolutely *MUST* buy a copy of Howard Massey's new book "Behind the Glass." You want a great summary of pro techniques from a variety of sources, that's the book you need. You want some insight into studio techniques - that's the book. You want some idea what kind of gear the pros use regularly (and some will surprise you!), it's in there.... in one nice, concise and complete package...

If this sounds like a glowing recommendation, it is - I certainly learned a thing or two in terms of techniques and gear I'd like to try... For the advanced novice or intermediate home recordist, it would be an INVALUABLE resource.... even a beginner will be pointed in the right direction if they're at all serious about recording...

Well, I took the advice, called the wife at work and said...if you want to make me happy for valentines day....you can buy me this book.... OH MY GOD ... I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!!!!!!! what an awesome book.... thank you thank you thank you..

And I have taken one important thing away so far. It doesnt matter what you record with, how you record it or how much it cost, just as long as it sounds GOOD!...
There are so many conflicting styles of these producers, who compresses the stuff out of everything, who refuses to, who mikes a guitar amp with a 57 against the grill..who mikes it a foot away. totally amazing.

Excellent reading, and suprisingly, alot of questions about us home recordists and how we can sound better, not just alot of high end stuff.

Now I just need a project......

Although some of it may be over your head...

...it will give you a good insight into the way things are done by the pros.

And if you keep honing your recording skills, you will understand and be able to incorporate at least some of those processes into your own techniques.

As far as other books, Craig Anderton's got some good ones... Huber & Runstein's Modern Recording Techniques is a staple handbook...

Books are great, but the information you have at your disposal via this forum and others (Oh, sorry Dragon... I mean "via this forum ONLY... forget the others...") is absolutely invaluable.

I'll look into some of that stuff. Unfortunately books are fairly expensive here in Europe. Well, in Holland at least.

I'm new to this forum AND to home recording, so I'll definitely learn lots from all you who post here.

You'll see me around asking dumb questions in the future. I'll even try to post in the proper threads.
