Everything sounds better when you're drunk, which is why, when you mix drunk, the mix sounds worse the next day.

I seem to hear a lot better when I'm drunk, and that usually means everything sound worse.. Professional mixes usually sound good, but I usually hear lotsa nasty shit in my own mixes I don't hear while being sober.. :(

Kinda fun to drink a few brewskis while recording and mixing. Just a hobby for most of us anyway... Anyone else feel like they're being productive and doing something important while drinking and recording? Might not sound good the next day, but it's fun to sit there and play with your gadgets while toasty...

Not really. I do find I get a little heavy-handed with the effects, though. Like the next morning, I'll wake up and wonder why I put the Leslie simulator on the tamborine . . . why there's a phase/flange over the entire bus, or why I put backwards reverb and reverse cymbals on every chorus. :D

On the plus-side, I do notice a nicer sense of space to some of my mixes. Things tend to be particularly well panned, verbs and delays tend to take on a lot of size. I think it might be easier for some people to "see" the mix 3-dimensionally when in that state.

damn . . you're all a bunch of alcoholic burnouts who have nothing to do but sit around and listen to music all the time.....

and when you're not listening to music your making music!?!?

the very notion sickens me!

Alcohol, caffine, and other "mind-altering" drugs, even tobacco, seriously alter your hearing (negatively). Mixing drunk is a bad idea, as is mixing while high, and even mixing on Red Bull (or even soda).

I always mix after drinking about 3 cans of Sprite, then 3 more during the mixing...

unfortunately i am a caffine addict. i almost always have soda before or during mixing. does anybody know exactly how caffine affects your hearing? i have never heard of that.

(From a hearnet article), it seems that caffeine exacerbates tinnitus, which could be an issue for some people.

The phone was ringing?

Sorry, client's Boogie was rattling, so I put my ear up to it to see if I could isolate it.

Well, the rattling's gone, but now there's a weird hum at 10k.

we had a bit of an unfortunate incident a few months back. my buddy and i were working on a mix for a song that is pretty weird. i got tired and left, so my friend decided to light one up and give the mix another go.

well, just last week, after hours on the phone with digidesign tech support, we finnally were able to open the session again.

it's finally just a funny story now that we got it back.

seriously though, some of the best albums ever probably were mixed by people who were high...floyd, bowie, VU, hendrix, my bloody valentine, black sabbath....who knows...the osmonds

Creativity... herb inspires creativity. It helps you focus on something more intently, sometimes TOO intently. Now, go try and lay a final mixdown on mushrooms! That is the true test! :)

I love to record and mix as well as gourmet cooking.
The Julia Child approach works fine for cooking (a little wine
for the pot and a little more for me). Always have to remind
myself not to get carried away with it for both cooking
and mixing.
