I finally managed to get out of the house and audition some monitors the other day
(...but of course the selection was limited and didn't include some of the things I'd already become interested in checking out...)
I did manage to pretty much narrow things down (within those I could audition) to some Wharfedale 8.2 Pro A's (which I'd read a lot of good things about), and the Event PS6's (which I'd never even heard of, presumably since they are now discontinued).
I found the PS6's a tiny bit "smoother" sounding than the Wharfedale's--they made the Wharfendale's almost sound harsh in the upper mids to highs area--but then I'm wondering if that was actually because the PS's were lacking a little up there (something which my further research has confirmed as a possibility, so I'm going to have to go back for more listening with some different material).
Interestingly, I felt both had better low end than the 8" truths in the store, despite the smaller driver (I'm focusing on speakers in the 5-6.5" range because of space issues--always the possibility of upgrading with a sub in the future).
Since the TR6's from zzounds are the same price as I was quoted for the PS6's, I'm curious how similar the TR range might be to the PS range from event? I'm guessing the TR range replaced the PS range, which usually suggests some "improvements" were made. Anyone know? Am I correct in thinking that the PS6's a little overpriced at $399, if that is the case?
