Evaluating Used Tascam 688?

Alright, here's the thing. I have a chance to buy a used Tascam 688 8-track recorder for $660 (that's with shipping included). This looks like a great unit, it even comes in a hard case. I am able to purchase it through iescrow.com, which allows me to evaluate the product before the money is sent to the person. Now, I really want this unit, but I don't know what I should do to make sure it's worth $660. What should I look for/do to make sure everything works right, and is in good shape. I should probably replace the heads when I get it, how much would this cost? What else should I get replaced? And how much does it usually cost for a tech to take a look at it all and fix what needs fixing (rough estimate)?
 
Visualy check the heads and transport guides for wear. Check to see that the heads aren't permanently magnatized. Check the pots and switches for crackles and feel. Look it over and see if it looks like it's been kicked around. Hopefully it will have a manual. Put it through its recording and playback operations. Carefully listen to the playback quality. If it sounds almost identical to what you recorded then it's probably okay. A tech can charge whatever they want. $25 to $75 an hour. Use it as much as you can before you pay for it, and you should be able to tell if anything major is wrong with it. Belts and allignment and lubrication could be done by you if you are so inclined. Electronic adjustments will have to be done by a tech if needed, unless you are also inclined and have the equipment. If it sounds okay then chances are it is okay. There's always a risk when buying used. Maybe Dom or Dragon will come along and add something to this. Good luck.
 
Thanks for the reply...Dom...Dragon? What do you guys think? And how exactly do I check to see if they are permanently magnatized or not? How much would the heads cost to replace, and could I replace them myself?
