I have used many mics over the years on kick drums and have settled in on the D112 but I have never used the RE20. I have seen it done but I have never compared...does anybody have some wisdom on this?
thanks

The nice thing about the EV Re20 on kick drum is that it has very little proximity effect. Its also a very neutral mic. So its popular on bass instruments because it gives a very natural sound. Im talking very natural. if you have a wicked sounding kick already it works great but dont expect it to flat out give that rock sound just by sticking it in. Of course it can be EQ'd easy enough for it. I would use it for things like jazz when i needed a very natural tone.

Not a big fan of it though unless i feel like using alot of EQ.

Very flattering bass response, flat off-axis response, good rejection, minimal proximity effect. Can't go wrong with 'em.

Like Darnold mentions, a very flat response, but they take EQ better than just about any dynamic on the market. They're large and "round" in the low end, for lack of a better way to put it, which is why people like them on kick and bass.

These guys pretty much summed it up. I have an RE20 and it works really well for a full sound.

My experience with the 112 is that it just doesnt give enough ..... beef.
Good to get the click but I never could get really good body with the 112.

The RE20 deffinitely has a round low end .... kind of old school sounding but you can get it right in there and it wont "woof out".

Lately I've been digging my CAD e100 a bit in front for a "crisper" full bodied kick sound.

BTW,

Good rejection with the RE20 was mentioned. Im going to have to disagree with that one. They arnt absolutely horrible in the area but i think RE20s do bleed a little more than other kick mics i have used. But i think that is actually why they have little proximity effect in the same process.

Definately not saying that is bad though. At least ive never had problems with the bleed with it on kick drum so i wouldnt worry. But i would like to clear away from it being excellent on bleed rejection.

Unfortunately i sold my second one to get my Dynaudio BM15s and the one i have left has a burnt out capsule. One day i will fix it but at the moment i am RE20less. It just sits in the control room on my desk where my clients can use it as a pretend light saber when were all playing start wars.

;)
