Reluctant Commander
I can get an EV Force 12 speaker that the guy says is fully restored to spec, including new cone with cloth surround, new voice coil, new spider, new everything, except the basket and the magnet are original. Says he has done approx 500 recones, and none have been returned, etc. Says he tested it with a 150 watt amp (it's a 150 watt speaker) and there are no issues, sounds great, etc.etc.etc. blah blah blah.... The photos look super clean and good as new, no glue showing, whatever.

For probably less than $100 bucks. I dont know what these things go for, or if they even make them or sell them any more. If they do, they are very hard to find. But it sounds like the specs on the thing might be similar to some of the bigger Eminence, magnet is maybe 4-5 poounds, sensitivity is around 97-98db? I believe the vc is maybe a 2 incher or bigger? Something like that.

All I wanna use it for is my Vox practice amp, since the 70/80 that's in the amp is nothing to brag about. I do use this amp for very small 1x monthly gigs and some basement jamming, but nothing road hard and put up wet.

Is this recone worth it? Or should I hold out for the real EVM-12L variety? (of which I already have 1....) Or should I just settle for a Swamp Thang and call it good?

Thanks for any insight!

it really depends on who did the re-cone

as long it was done right it is basically a brand new speaker in an old basket.

The reviews of his work are all very glowing and positive.

Do you happen to know anything about the sound of this particular speaker? (assume, for the moment that it is in perfect working order) Is it going to be better - generally speaking - sound than the stock factory stuff that is so unremarkble these days? Or is it going to sound like a budget EV?

I bought some reconed speakers years ago that have all performed great, there were 4 or 5 12" Celestions for guitar combos and some 15" JBL's for PA mains. The prices were very affordable, they have held up well, and there is no other way I could have a set of JBLs! And the tech always did a fine job on the reconing.
If he uses the correct materials that the speaker calls for it should sound fine, just like Rogue mentioned above.

What little info I can find says that this EV Force stuff was designed for PA's.

Will that translate to a good guitar speaker? I love the sound of the EVM-12L, but that was made for instrument.

Not sure if the Force 12 will compare to the regular guitar stuff from Eminence, Celestion, Weber, etc....for straight guitar work.

Well, I ended up buying an Eminence Commonwealth 12 instead.

But ya know what..... I cannot find any fault with the guy listing this EV Force recone for sale.

His feedback is stellar, everybody really really likes his work and his results, near as I can tell.

But WOW! I have never had anybody give me so much information and answer all of my questions so completely! His service is absolutely outstanding, even though I ended up not buying his speaker! Everything he told me was honest and spot on accurate. Too bad he didn't have any EVM's for sale. I definitely woulda bought one of those!

VERY IMPRESSIVE! I didn't even buy from him this time, and I would buy from him again!!

doesn't sound like he's useing ev parts... so it's just a generic speaker... yep even if it's the ev basket and magnet... the kit used is what really counts on a recone... the shop i used to work for had a full time speaker tech... and there's no reason a speaker cant be just as good when rebuilt... it's just that if it's a stamped basket it's not worth doing...

.. it's just that if it's a stamped basket it's not worth doing...

Well that would depend on the price difference wouldn't it?

if I can get a re-cone for 25 to 50 bucks cheaper than a new replacement
guess which one I am going with... Hmmmm, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out:p

in that case, despite whether it stamped, forged or cast basket it is definitely worth doing.
however the savings will depend on what kind of basket it is.

then again maybe not... you'l'd be taking questionable basket (there are admittedly minor changes over time so it's abit off)... then putting in non standard parts (ie.you dont find celestions factory parts)... so there's no way you can be assured that you're getting the real deal outta that speaker... on the other hand if ya dont care so be it...
