Hi,

I've been thinking about getting a Les Paul but the price is somewhat prohibitive. I've got $2k CAD to blow on a solidbody guitar and I've been really interested in an ESP Eclipse - II, especially the vintage black. I haven't tried one out yet but everything I've read said it's a nice guitar, and the video's I've found it sounds nice enough. If I could find a pre-lawsuit Ibanez I'd pick that baby up but out in the sticks they're pretty rare. I've got an AES 1500B semi-hollowbody that I've been using but I'm feeling the joneses for a nice meaty slab of rock and roll! Plus - I'm not all that keen on supporting Gibson for the fact that it seems like between them and Fender buying every frikken' music company out there, there is no pricing competition in our western hemisphere and we're all getting planked on the financial end of it.

Does anyone have any experience with these badboys? I've got active electronics in my bass but I've never used them in an electric guitar. I know on my bass I've got to run a -6dB pad on my bass amp to get a clean preamp tone.

What are the pro's and con's of active p/u's in an electric guitar?

Any info would be helpful!

Thanks so much,

Andy

Great quality from ESP. Especially if it is an ESP and not an LTD. Not putting LTD down, there are some great LTD guitars out there, but there are some not so great as well. Where yuo know if it says ESP you are getting a hand made instrument.

I tried two out this week.

I tried a new ESP II. Extremely impressive. Played amazing. Smaller scale neck which is easier for us guys without the massive hands. Beautiful finish. If you like EMG's, you would like this guitar.

I tried a used ESP II standard. I liked this one better. It played the same but had the Seymour Duncans instead of the EMG's. Unfortunately it had a dime size chip right in the front. I can't shell out $1,100 with that big of a chip.

I also tried an LTD EC-1000. Not much different I could tell from the eclipse.

One thing was on the two new instruments they had the real crappy store strings. They are like rusted up or something. Was hard to get a good feel.

Great guitars as long as EMG's are your thing, which it seems are most peoples thing these days
