ES57 on Kick?

You can always try it, play with placement in the kick, etc. You can also maybe try grabbing something like DrumTrig from http://www.stormrecordingstudio.co.uk/ and copy the kick track, and run both the natural sound as well as a sampled kick to give it more oomph than you'd get from just a heavily eq'd 57.

I own both an SM57 as well as an ES57, I like to use them both together to mic distorted guitars; I think they sound great together, although I have yet to A/B them.

A/B between SM-57 and GLS ES57

I own both...have A/B'd them on several sources. Here's my take:

1. I prefer the ES-57 for just about every "instrument" mic'ing situation. It's just a tad (to my ears) more "clear" sounding than the SM-57 which sounds just a tad (to my ears) more "character sounding". Oh, by the way, the ES-57 (again my opinion) makes a killer snare microphone.

2. I feel exactly the opposite for the "58" models. The SM-58 still sounds a bit more "character'd" than the ES-58; however, I find that I prefer that sound for rock vocals. The ES-58 is, again, a bit more "clear" sounding for recorded vocals.

As for using the ES-57 to mic kickdrums, hmmm.... There are products out there that are relatively inexpensive and much better tailored to that purpose. MSH here (who has posted in this thread) makes fantastic microphones...I haven't used the new series he's moving to at the moment, but take a gander through www.naiant.com and drop him a line about recording with omni's....I've never had poor results using his mics on any number of sources.
