I have the Waves SSL collection which I sometimes use when I'm mastering from stems (along with other external hardware) to help give thinner, in the box tracks the "SSL sound". The are a lot of non-linear elements to hardware that are very difficult to model. While I can't say that it sounds exactly like the real thing, they do a good job in adding a more organic sound to strictly digital tracks, and are worth using for that reason.
For mixing the channel strip is nice because most everything is in front of you, EQ, comp, expander, etc. without having to switch back and forth between multiple plugs.
