I just bought a new one. Really pretty tobacco sunburst which is kinda different for an SG.

I think it sounds and plays great, but then again, I've never owned a Gibson.

I got a good deal, I think...375 @ Mars. Anybody own or ever play one of these? I think/hope it's gonna be a fun studio guitar.

Thoughts?

Michael

it outta be a good studio gtr...especially if you like it. The Gibson SG's are speed demon machines, Imo and your basic rock and roll guitar, other than the Les Paul. Great fret access, and generally a wide neck that is kinda thin. I always like the Gibson vibrolas too...but you don't see them much. I had a V with one and loved it.

I tried one out when I was looking for a 2nd guitar a while ago. I played it for a while, and while it was OK, the next guitar I tried (a used Peavey Odyssey) was the one. I really wanted a guitar that looked like an SG, but after noting the difference in quality between these two axes, it didn't take me long to decide on the Peavey (which is pretty nice looking, too). YMMV.

I think the SG just grows on ya after awhile. I used to hate em but nowadays I dig that SG tone and feel. Enjoy it!!

It's gotta be one of the coolest-looking guitars there is. I just love the look of those things. My dad had one in high school, but he sold it because he thought he didn't want to play rock music anymore. Of course, he turned out to be wrong. Sigh.

For electrics, I use SG's by choice. I love Les Paul's but can't hack the weight on stage. The funny part is that I use an SG Supreme (midnight burst) with Seymour Duncans with taps (SH-4 and SH-14) *and* a $189 Epiphone SG with the classic 57 humbuckers off the Supreme. I really like both of these guitars, and the Epiphone is the cheap travel/airplaneable axe. The Epiphone has 3 less frets, and only one volume and tone control, which I like if I don't have a volume pedal. The bridge is closer to the pickup on the Supreme, making it brighter, as the bridge was moved up to accomodate the 3 frets. I use the Epiphone often for blues rythym. I have short arms, and the reach on the Supreme to say, a b flat half bar chord is brutal, but a snap on the Epiphone. I much prefer the squared off frets on the Supreme for lead, but I'm realy a rythym guitarist. Enjoy your new toy, and please post a picture. I've never seen a sunburst SG.-Richie

i wouldnt enjoy the stock pick-ups though...changing the p/u's would be a cheap way of getting a decent tone out of a cheap guitar,,,while looking good.

Richard, you should check out the Les Paul DC series. Just like the Standard but very light, 24 frets, double cutaway and cheaper. (about $1,300) This guit rocks.
