Epihpone SG Custom

My friend is thinking about buying an electric.BTW hes been playing for year, know his stuff and has owned some good guitars. But he moved aout of home and had to sell them. Now he need a new cheap one. I was thinking about the Epi SG custum and maybe replacing the pickup(s). Godd idea? Bad idea? Any better idea?
(BTW dont suggest squire strat, we both hate strats - i know im gonna cop shit for that)

I'm planning on buying a Epiphone Special SG (for xmas) and updating the pickups to EMGs (81 and 85....metal playing is sometimes fun after all). After shopping around I got the deal down to about 250$ for the package. Of course, I'll have to try the SG before buying it, but if it's anything like my brother's epiphone special II, then it's worth the small price tag.
