Trailing Behind Again
This is sort of a cross-post, but not really.

Awhile back I posted a thread similar to this in title in the guitar forum.

My first recordings were pretty much like a schoolboy getting his first piece, hit and miss, sometimes you scored.

Anyhow........

I have copies of my first analog trials on CD, and I was listening to them to see just how bad they were and I came across this little song idea I had put down in a hurry. I was struck by the bass' tone! I have tried and tried in the digital realm and can't get close to this.

Anyway, I finally found a way to post a clip, so here it is.

No critiques, it's already set in stone and I know all the bad things that I didn't know then: DI acoustic guitar with a cheap soundhole pickup; bad drums, etc.

It's just a nostalgic post.

Badass bass

i remember an old recording i did....it was a DI guitar track through a digitech Metal Master stomp box to the line in on a behringer mixer, into my stock soundcard, single tracked in Acid with a "stereo simulator" plugin to make it sound layered. it was one of the best tones i ever got, and i don't even remember how i did it. on paper it sounds ugly, but for the song, it was damn near perfect. i'll see if i can find it. i couldnt recreate that sound if i wanted to, i guess it was just a fluke.

i think it had a lot to do with just finding a "sweet spot" on that pedal with all the tone settings or something...oh and i think i ran a slight flanger effect on the track too. i'll have to dig up the old Acid file to see what i did haha...

nice bass tone Rokket, it's always nice to dig up old recordings and find things that make you say "damn that was cool!"

Good sounds overall for an early recording. Nice bass.

Tim, Ed, Zed, thanks for the listen!!!

This is an open thread, if you do find something that brings back good memories, post it here!!!!

Thanks! I really had fun with this track. I did the bass last, and by the time I tracked it, I was really into the song!

If you find your guitar track, post it in this thread. We can have a whole thread of "how in the hell did I get that tone?" songs!

Anyone else have any old recordings that they want to dig up and post here? :D

I honestly dont like that tone. But its a good bass line. no old recordings because im never done any :(

Old recordings and bass tone I like... Here, click on "demo montage 1 in the player

That first bit is my SWR 750x recorded straight up with no real front end processing.... I like its purity and always come back to that. Nowadays I use different stuff, I'm finding out all sorts of crazy stuff to do with the bass pod live before I mix it. I use that thing front end now, but I still record it using an audix d6 or d4 depending. The tube/solid state stuff in the 750x really brings whatever stuff comes before the amp or in the fx loop to life. the segment in that clip where theres some singing has one of my favorite bass tones, and the line aint bad either.

I kind of like the one posted, it's just honest bass that works with the other parts.

I wish I was set up to record my amp. The problem is my mic selection sucks, and I don't have an amp... :o

But I was pretty surprised at how well DI alone did on my bass.

Yep! Mine :D
That's what we're all trying to do certainly - have our personal expression come through in some way in the recording. But we so often fail, as the expression so easily gets sucked out by technicalities.

Bass indeed does have personality on this tune. Sounds very lively and appropriate to the tune.

Since I suck at the technicalities, I guess it's only proper that I let my personality show through!

Thanks Tim!

Thanks David!

Now if I could just reproduce it and make it more of a song than a song idea... :(
