IMHO Elixers make fine solid wood guitars sound like they're made of plywood.

I just saw a box of 10 sell for $12 at an auction I went to last week [edit: 10 sets that is]. Consequently I picked up a Turner Dynamic Model 33D, Astatic T-3 and a cool looking old steel dynamic (all functioning after I made cables for them) in a box full of cables for $1.

i dont know.. really, dont want to spend the money.. i use Ernie ball or d'daddario, they are cheap, and standard...

I've used them a couple of times on my bass. The bang-for-the-buck strings ever, since they last much, much longer than regular strings (especially on bass). However, I like the slightly played-in strings. These have a bright top edge, that could be (very) desirable, but I like my sound a bit darker. The bright sound stays untill the coating lets loose, and then the strings get dull pretty quickly.

Sound: yey, but not the best.
Value: yey!

Plus they feel pretty slick

Hmmmm .... never tried Elixers but I do use a coated string .... DR Extra Life. They're coated but it doesn't seem to make them sound different ...... just last a long time. I've had a set last the entire summer on my beach guitar which is quite an accomplishment.
Plus they come in colors ...... I like the red ones.

Long John Strings

I don't like them. They came stock on my Taylor and the coating on the strings "ragged out". I tried a couple more sets and had the same experience. To my ears, they were a little less bright than the GHS phospher bronze strings I normally use and didn't last any longer. And for what they cost, I can crank on three sets of the GHS for what one of the Elixers cost. My opinion, they're snake oil (like the Long John strings that came in a 3' long box so the strings wouldn't suffer from being coiled).

A lot of people I know love Elixirs. I don't like them on my Takamine. I like the Martin Extended Life SP+. I have aset on my Martin that still look and sound new and I don't even remember how long ago I installed them.

I used to buy those long Johns. (Stainless Steel) Snake oil huh? But they came in such cool packaging!

Call me crazy, but I LIKE changing strings. Kinda like giving your loved one a sponge bath. I've tried the Elixers (acoustic and electric), but didn't hear or feel anything that would make me quit the D'Addarios. The do feel a little slick when chording, and I don't like how they get ragged out from picking. But at least they're expensive.

I'm going more for D'Addario EXP's for coated strings over Elixer nanos but still use Elixers on the electrics. On acoustics, Elixer phospher bronze are still pretty good though and I'd rate 'em as a tossup between them and the EXP's. D'Addario is now making coated classical strings...what a godsend THAT is!
