Electro-Voice Ribbon Mics... Bad? Or Under-Appreciated?

They look uncannily similar to the RCA 44DX but seem to go for much less. So, were they just a poor copy, or usable mics in their own right?
 
My understanding, via Scott Dorsey at RAP, is that they can be O.K.

However...

If you're looking for the RCA ribbon type sound, one option would be to have Stephen Sank do his "bx" or "dx" mod on something like a Beyer or
B&O ribbon. If you score a good price on a Beyer, it should come out pretty reasonable pricewise.

Mark, didn't mean to imply that "O.K" meant that the EV's were anything near a world class mic like the RCA 44.

I did not know of any Electrovoice ribbons. I looked around the Electrovoice site and saw nothing about ribbon mics. The only makers of Ribbon mics that I was aware of was AEA, Royer, and Beyer.

He's talking about old mics. EV doesn't make them any more. :)
