Electro Voice RE-20 Output compared to Shure SM7??

Hey all -

I'm considering buying an EV RE-20 mic for VO work. I know they're frequently compared to the Shure SM7.

My only concern is the output of the mic: I tried a Shure SM7B and it was highly unsuccessful for me: through my ART preamp, I struggled to get enough gain without hiss.

I know a lot of people will say 'then get another preamp' but it's beyond my budget.....

SO: is the Electro Voice easier on the preamp, does it offer a higher output?

Thoughts appreciated!
Many thanks
J

about the same.

thought i never had to use much gain with an SM7/SM7

Does your pre-amp have an input and output gain?

if so try turning the output level to the max first then drive the input for a cleaner signal. The SM7 isn't really as low gain as people make it out to be.

Remember in the 24bit world peaking at -10 db is more then enough gain.

This is true. You should give the SM7 another try with that advice.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of the SM7 and I quite liked the RE-20 during the limited experience I had with it.

What is it your looking for ? The low sultry type voice?
