I have bought 3 of these so far, and thanks to Joel Hamilton, I am now using thr XLR out instead of the 1/4" out. I also discoverd how to record in 24 bit. These preamps sound good to my ears. If anyone is interested in hearing them, click below. Slumin, and THese blues got me way lowdown, are recorded at 24 bit, with the XLR outs. I used the EH on the vocal/harp mic, the guitar amp, and snare drum. THe 3 other mics, bass drum, room mic, high hat, went through ART TPSII preamps. I am going to buy more of these EH preamps! Thanks Joel, Timothy, and all of you that are helping me learn how to record. Walter

PS: FYI, everything I do is made up on ths spot live, with no overdubs, and all the drums, cymbals, vocals and guitar amp, are within a couple of feet of each other.

v. cool... you have a great voice for this kind of music...

what mics do you use, esp on vocals?

thanks for the replies guys!

Dairy giant: Here is the set up

AKG C414 B ULS - EH preamp - for guitar amp
AKG C414 B TL II - EH preamp - for vocal/harp on the rack
Pair of Oktava MK012 each with 3 different capsules(russian made)- one on high hat, one on the room overhead drums- ART TPSII preamp
AT3035 - ART TPS preamp - on the bass drum
RODE NT1A - EH pre amp on the snare

I am going to try to changing the NT1A to the room, and the Oktava to the snare. It is pretty tight getting me and all the mics set up. Here is the the way I set up live. Recording is the same, with just more mics. I am going to buy 3 more of these pre amps as soon as my gig $ bucket adds up to $600. Walter

thanks Walter... (sorry about the double post... dont know how to edit it!!)

I'm looking at picking up an ADK Vienna or Hamburg, or an MXL V69.... as I only have an old Audio Technica dynamic mic... sort of SM58ish, I believe. and preamps from my Behringer mixer... woo hoo!

tell me, can you get some distortion happening with the EH preamp?? if you want it???

thanks!

Very cool indeed Walter. Also, your more recent recordings with this pre sound great. And show a jump in quality over the earliest ones you posted when you first got the pre. So you're obviously gettin' it figured out. Cool vocal sound, and very nice harp.

THanks for the feedback everyone! I learn alot on this forum. The jump in quality came when Joel Hamilton told me to use the XLR out of the pre amp. I had been using the 1/4" out, and that one runs a different circurt or something. I was getting a little dissilusioned at that point, but now that I am recording in 24 bit, insteatd of 16, and using the xlr outs, I am very excited.

dairy giant: I don't like distortion, except if my guitar amp is breaking up, so I really haven't pushed the EH to that point. I get it to when the orange overload light just barely flickers when I hit/sing/strum. my loudest. Walter

I posted a live recording, done last night in a local club, using the EH pre's on the mp3 forum. Walter

Right on Walter! You're a soulful brother. Love your music, your straight ahead approach, and your enthusiasm.

I've still got my EHX pre rolling. Love that thing. If you'll recall, all the fussiness I had with mine was due, not to the pre, but to the unbalanced inputs on my soundcard.

These things sound just great for the money. GREAT. Just remember, if you've got a cheapo M Audio 2496 like mine, you're going to need to some kind of device to convert the balanced signal which comes out of the EHX pre to an unbalanced signal to feed into the cheapo soundcard. It took me a full month to figure out where that damn hum was coming from. :)

I had the same problem, and I have a delta 1010lt, so I pretty much have to use it on one of the first two inputs which are XLR, not really that much of a problem, but it was disheartening to hear that hum at 100hz when I first got the pre, and it's a minor inconvience to not be able to use it on any channel at the time being.

I have the delta 1010 and there is no hum. Walter
yeah the Delta 1010 has all balanced ins/outs, but like 4MTD said the 1010LT is unbalanced apart from ins 1 & 2.

I really enjoy listening to your stuff Walter.
